Former Harrington Sound Post Office For Sale
The Department of Public Lands and Buildings said they wish to “advise the public that The Government of Bermuda will, from Monday the 11th of May, offer for sale, the freehold of the former Harrington Sound Post Office and adjoining land parcel. Conditional and or unconditional offers are invited for the whole to be submitted by 12 noon on Friday 19th June 2015.”
The property can be viewed at the times below:
- Monday 11th May 2015 – 10.30am – 12.30pm
- Tuesday 19th May 2015 – 1.30pm – 3.30pm
- Wednesday 27th May 2015 – 10.30am – 12.30pm
- Thursday 4th June 2015 – 1.30pm – 3.30pm
- Friday 12th June 2015 – 10.30am – 12.30pm
“The property lends itself to use in its current form or a re-development which utilizes its planning zoning, views or nearness to the Harrington Sound and a busy thoroughfare,” a spokesperson said. “For more details contact estates@gov.bm or 441-294-9191.”

Please everyone call/email the Department of Public Lands and Buildings under the Ministry of Public Works to voice your disbelief and outrage. As small as Bermuda is, selling off government lands is NOT the answer.

@ young Bermudian, i am inclined to agree. to sell of the property just to spend it on financing a deficit, read a bloated civil service, is the not the answer, or, if the proceeds are going to be applied solely to the reduction of the $2B debt, then maybe.
funding inefficiencies with the sale of real estate is kicking the can further down the road with leaving nothing in the way of assets for our grandchildren.
It’s exactly what the PLP stated they were going to do in their 2012 budget, except they were talking about selling a lot of real estate, not just one property. Don’t recall the objections being raised then.

And where was your concern when the PLP gifted Coco Reef public land or when the previous CoH Admin gave away our Waterfront for almost 300 years?
Or when the PLP in their 2012 budget stated that as a means to boost the ‘soft real estate market’ and trim Government fat that they will embark on selling off $10mn in Govt assets. Refer to then Minister Michael Scott’s comments and the PLP 2012 budget. Actually this is what he stated:
Government Estates Minister Michael Scott has no qualms about placing some $10 million of Government property in a soft real estate market.
And a timeline for commercialising the sea bed, first mooted in 1998, is dependent on private developers.
The Estates Ministry is expecting to bring in an extra $10 million in revenue by selling or leasing underutilised properties.
“I haven’t a concern about this,” he said. “One has to try options in this environment punishing as it is.”
He said that Government would be otherwise left with high maintenance costs for its underutilised properties.
Mr Scott noted that sub Post Offices across the Island represented loss leaders for the Government.
“New ways of dealing with that asset have to be considered.
“The Ministry of Finance is interested in creating fiscal space. The Government competes in this kind of climate with private sector in that way.
“But I think we contribute to the private sector’s real estate inventory if you provide an opportunity for whoever’s out there.”

Why not market this property properly like any other seller instead of giving it away in a fire sale?

Idk buh this could be a good deal, government sold Grand Atlantic for 9 million…that has 70 something apartments…so this should go for about a 100 grand…give or take a dollar..water view and all…
You know what? The Govt is selling it. Good. One less thing to worry about. Sure if it was rented out it could recoup some money over the years but you’d have to worry about Govt being a landlord and maintaining the place which will involve civil servant man-power hours and W&E resources, etc.
Get rid of it. One less thing to worry about. It’s a very old pretty building so I hope the new owners don’t turn it into a stupid ice cream parlour or knock it down just to build a gaudy mansion.
Also in order to rent it it needs to be repurposed unless someone is opening a private postal service. That takes time and money. It’s better to sell and let the new owner incur any remedial cost
With it being someone elses they can do what they like. I say don’t sell but hey who am I, just some lowly bermudian who cares about their homeland.

The official OBA slogan “Sell Bermuda”. It will be interesting, with all the OBA’S new policies, to see who will purchase this property and what it will be used for.
If you’re so concerned, why don’t you buy it or put together a consortium of investors to purchase it?
Or we could just “sell out the Bermuda public” and keep paying for unneeded infrastructure

upper level – small tea, coffe house and keeping remnants of the old office fittings or model similar to Perot Post Office also selling small souvenirs and post cards with a royal mail box.
lower level – spa/gym/yoga studio combo overlooking the sound
alternstively the post office can be modified to offer only Post Boxes.

The government have been trying to let the rundown eyesore on Shelly bay road for over a year, maybe selling this too would create something more pleasing on the eye, and also give residence and visitors alike something to utilize in the future……plus, it would relinquish funds that are being constantly pumped into it after storms…..
It is a solitary piece of land with good water views in an existing high-end residential area and is zoned Residential. Let it go to the highest bidder. Government does not need to hold on to every little piece of property it has, especially in residential neighborhoods.
Probably one of those RUBIS CUBE deal.
