Video: Norwegian Dawn Freed After Grounding
[Updating] The Norwegian Dawn has apparently run aground in the North Channel ths afternoon [May 19] having left the Dockyard on its regularly scheduled departure. A few other craft can be seen near the vessel and we unofficially understand marine divers are on route to the location. Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.
Update 8.37pm: An ABC report states, “The ship – with 2,675 passengers and 1,062 crew members – was departing King’s Wharf, Bermuda, when it lost power, officials said.
“The ship’s propulsion was affected and, at which time, the vessel made contact with the channel bed. All guests and crew are safe,” Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement. “The ship has full power and onboard services continue as scheduled.”
Update 8.47pm: A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told Bernews, “On Tuesday, May 19th at approximately 5:00 pm ET, Norwegian Dawn temporarily lost power as the ship was departing King’s Wharf, Bermuda. The ship’s propulsion was affected at which time the vessel made contact with the channel bed. All guests and crew are safe.
“The ship has full power and onboard services continue as scheduled.
“The ship’s team is currently assessing the situation and we will provide more information as it becomes available.”

Update 11.35pm: From our view point at the east end, the ship has moved position
Update 12.21am May 20: Shawn Crockwell, Minister of Tourism Development and Transport, confirmed that following its departure from King’s Wharf in Dockyard this afternoon, the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn ran aground while transiting the North Channel.
“There are 2,675 passengers and 1,062 crew members on board. There were no reported injuries, the vessel remained stable, and there was no intake of water or pollution threat, said Minister Crockwell.
“Efforts were made to refloat the ship at high tide around 10:26pm ADT. The Government tug boats were on hand to assist and the ship was successfully refloated shortly after 11 p.m. She will remain anchored overnight and a hull survey will be carried out in the morning.”
“I would like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to the Marine and Ports team, our pilots and the Chief Maritime Operations Controller for all of their hard work this evening.”

Update 12.43am May 20: A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said, “On Tuesday, May 19th at approximately 5:00 pm ET, Norwegian Dawn had a temporary malfunction of its steering system, causing the ship to sail slightly off course as the ship was departing Bermuda, resulting in the vessel making contact with the sea bed. All guests and crew are safe and there were absolutely no injuries.
“The ship’s officers, engineers and an independent dive team have confirmed the structural integrity of the ship. With high-tide this evening, the ship was floated and moved to a nearby anchorage position where it will remain overnight.
“The ship will be thoroughly inspected in Bermuda by DNVGL, the ship’s classification society, before returning to Boston. The ship is fully operational with the full complement of onboard services available to guests.
“The ship is sailing on a seven-night Boston to Bermuda cruise with 2,443 passengers and 1,059 crew. We will provide additional updates in the morning when more information becomes available.”
Too bad Burt and the PLP crowd weren’t on the ship and ‘stuck’ for the moment – we could then board and prevent them from making a mockery of this country when they go to Britain to cry to Mommy.
Here’s a video of the ship. Enjoy! http://youtu.be/v-mE9J36_XM
oh no………
Now who is gonna blame the P.L.P for this.
you see technically it is the pops fault because they did not dredge the north channel btw
Mokingjay…Do you ever say anything positive or anything worthwhile. You must be one bitter person. Every neighbourhood has that house where nobody wants to visit at Halloween because that is where the mean lady or man lives. I guess that is you.
or it has to involve politrics
I haven seen a ship stock out there for years. They will be ok.
This is a crying shame. The captain and pilot will never receive invitations to become members of BBIRYC. Before one sails a ship they should always check the charts for reefs and keep an eye out for reefs. It clearly is amateur hour on the high seas today. Unless New was on a career day and was sailing that ship.
The ship lost power for a period so I am assuming it drifted onto the reef. As was stated in the article.
@Whatwillittake Have you read the story. The ships power failed, AND its steering would fail, hence it would drift out of the channel and then run onto reefs. I has not run aground like the Concordia in Italy. Sheesh!
You make the dumbest comments.
Thanks! I’m glad my comments are so important to you that you feel you have to comment!

Clearly you cant read Commodore JB!! And nobody wants an invitation to your stuck up club where you judge people on information that is clearly written here in this article but is overlooked by yourself…shove your sailboats somewhere captain dumbdumb
You realize that account is satire right?
You do have one thing correct though, you’re petty!
Hmmmmmmm i think you’ll find that the commodore is a made up thing by a humourist.
FYI I just heard this on the CNN International channel. That’s some very fast travelling news! I very much hope any reef damage is minimal and that no oil is leaked.
OBAs fault? PLP’s fault? Too much swizzle? New floating hotel for American’s Cup? Union shutdown? Didn’t pay their BELCO bill? Swerved to miss drug boat drop off? How many W&E employees will it take to get her loose? What’s this going to cost us, they better be transparent! Hope they have work permits if they plan to stay more than 21 days!
Welcome to Bermuda. Did I miss anything?
Cheers
Saw this coming.
Just a matter of time.
GPS is worth sheet and too many rely on it.
A ship that size/draft/wind play a big part.
Technoligy.
Later.
The ship lost power before it made contact with the reef.
@ cap232: You are correct in stating “she” ran aground due to loss of power…
Very true cap232.
Of course most of us earlier posters were not aware of this nor you but you waited to make the find before commenting.
Yes I jumped the gun and so did many others.
Just like every other incident that happens were are too quick and like lemmings leap.
Shalom.
Yes Terry, all that’s as relevant and pertinent as which direction the tides were flowing…
Right, so it was an issue with GPS, despite the report which says the vessel lost power. Idiot.
This is on MSN already.
Just looked out…it’s still there. Wonder what they’re going to do???
Guest, relax n enjoy!!!
Seems no body knows how to read today.
Even after updates, seems nobody knows how to read.
Does anybody read the story before making idiotic comments. The ship lost power and propulsion was affected. SMH.
Hey! Anyone notice the ship is GONE!! Did she sink? OMG
BTA gets a lifeline .
Hambury will add 2 thousand extra land base guests To the bta stats. Be careful people. The bta are slick.
No doubt , and with immediate effect !
I just heard they are going to empty their holding tanks to lose some of their weight!! Not only have they ruined those reefs, now they are going to pollute our water for weeks. There has to be another way without continuing to destroy our natural surroundings!!
Hope the wind does not pick up and cause trouble!
I guesss in the old days we would hsve got our boats and raided the ship…. like a bunch of land pirates. Hope all goes well high tide at 10.26pm… it not….maybe a new hotel..land bridge….damm I even know a contractor….
It lost power, nothing to do with Gps or the channel…What part you don’t understand.
I hope everyone is safe. I have actually conducted table top exercises for this exact scenario. I trust that my former colleagues have it all in hand but if not I am only an email away!
I have an idea. Just use this cruise ship as one of the floating hotels. Save money. Now Bermuda only needs to brink in one.
Any idea what a ship like that costs? Norwegian Dawn was $400 million back in 2002 and Breakaway was $840 million in 2013. We are broke. We can’t afford it. They are arranging to bring one in for the America’s Cup in 2017 though, but not sure what the financial arrangement is.
As part of my rigorous training for the around the island kayak race , I have familiarized myself with all of Bermudas territorial waters and navigational hazards. I hope this was a mechanical malfunction and not a result of poor navigation
So how much are they going to pay for smashing up our reef?
It will self replenish.
Can’t say much for Bermuda.
Attitudes.
wow, @Terry, that is actually scary to think about, no power, no control? these ships are so big. oh well an extra night at sea.
Glad everyone is safe! Hopefully if there is no hull damage high tide will lift them off the reef.
Just another story added to the Bermuda Triangle theory….
At least Bermuda has gotten some free advertising. And I bet the bta will wana take credit.
View from North Shore: the ship is lit up tonight and as still as a ship in a bottle. Who would want their costly vacation stuck like this? The anxiety period and need to return home on time for work or personal reasons would make many regret this cruise to BDA. So stop making this political sparring.
What happen to the tug boats
I am sure that Norwegian Cruise Lines will offer the passengers some sort of incentive to use their services again after this unfortunate mishap.
Hello? Yes. Is this the Lobster Pot Restaurant? Ahhh good. We need 2,162 shrimp cocktails, 2,104 orders of the lobster shrimp and crab cakes, 4,232 orders of Rockfish with fried bananas and almonds , and 34 hamburgers. To go.
Send Spielberg’s yacht to rescue them!
Norwegian Dawn lost power 2009, 2010 and 2013!
Incidents you can see at

Bermy reef and cruises now suffer from unreliability on this ship
These tonight are possibly the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen on Bernews. We have potentially a serious issue here — probably not, but could be. If the hull is damaged from hitting a reef, the ship could be out for repairs for a period of time when she’s supposed to be bringing passengers to Bermuda. And the publicity isn’t necessarily good. The cruise industry has had a dubious safety record in the past few years, particularly with giant new ships designed for entertainment that arguably carry far too many people to operate safely. Aside from the negative cruise publicity, adding the association with “Bermuda” and “run aground” isn’t good.
Should make people think about the triangle.
I hope there was no damage to the reefs. And if there is, NCL should pay up.
The ship is now off the reef and anchored in the channel about 1 km west of the grounding spot (until morning?)
@ cole: Thanks for that update.
Lol gotta love these Comments from the Peanuts Gallery !!!
It’s back up in dockyard now to the dock, they must have changed there mind and came back to the dock.
There must be something in the Bermuda stone.
It’s not just the walls on the side of the roads that get taken out, now we have our underwater walls being hit.
Why did the boat loose power, and could it happen again? I would hate to be on the open ocean and have some mechanical problems
Kind of like how the PLP handled Bermuda once they got “the POWER”, crashed the big girl straight into a rock!
Except in our case we would have not seen the cruise ship get free, but remain stuck for a decade slowly trying to pry loose, meanwhile Ewart is on his little rowboat paddling away like Captain Hook trying to escape the ticking crocodile!
If OBA made the high tide in the afternoon instead of at night, then this would never have happened. I’m very surprised PLP/PC hasn’t picked up on this since they are usually so quick to lay blame where it belongs.
Where are the People’s Complainers on this? Let’s hear from the foreign church guy.
