Azorean Delegation Meets With Premier Dunkley
Fostering relationships, strengthening historical ties, agriculture and immigration matters were just a few topics of discussion last week when the visiting Azorean delegation met with the Premier Michael Dunkley.
Representatives from the Azorean Government were visiting Bermuda last week to meet local government officials as well as show support for the Island’s Azorean community.
Premier Dunkley with [Left to Right] Dr. Paulo C Teves, Regional Director for the Communities, Attorney General Trevor Moniz, Mr. Rodrigo Vasconcelos de Oliveira, Regional Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy, MP Jeff Sousa and Andrea Moniz-DeSouza, Honorary Counsel for Portugal in Bermuda.
“On Friday the Premier welcomed the group to the Cabinet Office to discuss matters of mutual interest between the two regions,” a government spokesperson said.
“Present at the meeting were Mr. Rodrigo Vasconcelos de Oliveira, Regional Secretary of the Presidency for External Relations, Dr. Paulo C Teves, Regional Director for the Communities, Attorney General Trevor Moniz, Home Affairs Minister Michael Fahy, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Derrick Binns, Andrea Moniz-DeSouza and MP Jeff Sousa.”
The Premier said, “Bermuda and the Azores have significant historical ties, as well common challenges due to our insular geography. We view the Azores as an important partner of Bermuda.
“In fact, it should be highlighted that the Azores was one of the signatories of the Hamilton Declaration on Collaboration for the Conservation of the Sargasso Sea, adopted in Bermuda March 11, 2014. I shared with the delegation that we have a very vibrant Portuguese community with a proud heritage, and they have contributed much to our Island.
“Last Friday, my Cabinet colleagues, MP Sousa and I had a very good discussion with the Azorean Government representatives and we were pleased to have the opportunity to welcome to them to the Island.”
Also while on Island last week, the delegation made a donation of cultural books to the Bermuda National Library and the Bermuda College. They also visited Warwick Academy school and held meetings with local community organisations.
