Bermuda’s CCCAN Swimming Team Announced

June 18, 2015

The XXIX Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships will be held in Barbados from June 23rd to 27th, with eight swimmers set to represent Bermuda.

The Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association has selected a team of athletes who have reached a minimum of 2 AAA time standards to represent Bermuda at the Championships.

All of these swimmers were part of the Carifta Championships earlier this year in Barbados and will be looking to improve on their Carifta performances.

With 28 countries invited to participate at the Championships this will be a great challenge for Bermuda’s swimmers to test themselves against the best from our region.

Bermuda’s Team

Skyler Powell

Local Swim Club: Sharks, Age: 13, School: BHS, 1st time to CCCAN, Main events: Freestyle and IM. Powell will be looking to build off her strong performances at her first Carifta.

Madelyn Moore

Local Swim Club: Sharks, Age: 15, School: Warwick Academy, 1st time to CCCAN. Moore is well known in Bermuda for her outstanding performances over the last few years at Carifta. She will be looking to continue her strong performances against some familiar competitors along with some different challengers.

Ashley Irby

Local Swim Club: Sharks, Age: 13, School: Saltus Grammar School, 2nd time to CCCAN, Main events: Freestyle. Irby has been performing at a high level locally and at Carifta over the last few years. She will be looking to elevate her performances at CCCAN against a very competitive field in her main events.

Philip Hagen

Local Swim Club: Sharks, Age: 18, School: Saltus Grammar, 1st time to CCCAN, Main events: Freestyle and IM. Hagen continues to develop into a strong swimmer and will be looking forward to further improvement at University this fall. He will be looking to further lower the times that he has set this year that will put him in the mix against strong competition.

Jesse Washington

Local Swim Club: Sharks, Age: 16, School: Warwick Academy, 3rd time to CCCAN. Washington having moved into a new age group has been working hard and improving but it has been difficult to reach the podium as he is at the bottom of a very competitive age group.

Jack Harvey

Local Swim Club: Harbour, Age: 12, School: Warwick Academy, 1st time to CCCAN, Main events: Backstroke and Freestyle. Harvey is fresh off his first Carifta and will be looking to make his mark as he follows in his big sisters footsteps.

Keagan Woolley

Local Swim Club: Sharks, Age: 12, School: Somersfield, 1st time at CCCAN, Main events: Freestyle and Breaststroke. With a full slate of events this will be a great experience for Woolley to continue to develop, get stronger and challenge himself against good competition.

Evan Farrow

Local Swim Club: Harbour, Age: 14, School: Somersfield, 1st time at CCCAN, Main events: Freestyle and Backstroke. After a few injury plagued seasons Farrow is showing some great promise. As he continues to work hard we will see him challenge at this level of competition.

Congrats to all the named contestants. Very proud of you and thanks for representing Bermuda.
Would this be an appropriate time to ask suggest we plan for increased access to swimming for all children? These kids are all awesome and have the wonderful privilege of having parents that can afford local swim club rates. All of the clubs,I believe are registered charities and provide great help in subsidizing costs, but they still can’t reach everyone.
