Bermuda Loses To The Bahamas At Davis Cup
It was a tough day for Bermuda against the Bahamas at the Davis Cup tennis tournament, with Bermuda’s players fighting hard and establishing chances in each match, but eventually coming up short.
First up was Gavin Manders against Rodney Carey from the Bahamas. Manders got off to a great start as he got the early break and went up 4 -1, however Carey managed to break back and then level the score at 4-4.
The score remained even into the first set tie break, when Carey seized early opportunities and took a 5-2 lead in the tie break. Manders fount back to level the score at 5-5, but serving at 6-6 all, Carey was able win the next two points to take the set 7-6 [8-6].
In the second set it was even until Manders was serving at 3-4 when he was broken, giving Bahamas a critical 5-3 lead and allowing Carey to serve out the match at 6-3.
David Thomas was up next in the second match against Kevin Major from the Bahamas. Major took advantage of a slow start by Thomas to gain an early break. Thomas was able to get going to make it 1-2. At 2-3 however, play was suspended to due heavy rains, causing an interruption of nearly four hours.
When play resumed, Thomas was unable to break back, giving Major the set at 6-4. In the second set, Thomas was never able to gain the upper hand despite having opportunities to break. Major was able to gain the break advantage and serve out the second set, giving Bahamas a two sets to love victory.
With the fixture already decided, Neal Towlson and Jenson Bascome faced off against Marvin Rolle and Jamaal Adderley. The first set was hard fought, with both sides fighting off break points. The set remained deadlocked until Bahamas secured the key break to give them a 7-5 first set win.
With light fading, the second set was started under the lights – rare for a Davis Cup fixture. In the second set, it was much the same, with both sides displaying some great doubles play, but again a single break in the second set was all Bahamas needed to serve out the match.
