Student Presentations Following BFIS Internships

July 27, 2015

On Friday, July 24, this summer’s BFIS Interns gave ‘standing room only’ presentations to over 60 insurance professionals, parents, former interns and BFIS scholars in the training room at KPMG, on their experiences in the insurance markets of Atlanta, Bermuda, Chicago and London.

Although the BFIS intern programmes are short, [Bermuda – 3 weeks, Atlanta, Chicago and London – 2 weeks] they are extremely intensive and give the four teams of students opportunities to learn about insurance in depth from the people who work in it.

Bermuda interns: Ciara Burrows, Yuki Sun, Sydney Neal; London interns: Tom Svensen, James Gregory; Altanta interns: Conner Elliott, Courtney Fisher, Arthur Begeman, Tare Brangman; Chicago interns: Jesse Marshall, Denzel Simons. [Missing: Zachary Friesen [Bermuda]; James Gilmour, William MacKenzie [London]; Laura Burns, Emilie Bacon [Chicago].

Cathy Lapsley, BFIS Executive Director said this year’s Bermuda interns included 3 sophomores who had found that participating at this point in their academic careers was extremely helpful in directing them towards subjects they might not have considered taking at college.

She went on to thank hosting companies both in Bermuda and overseas and their staff who meet with the students without whom the programme would not be possible, and the sponsors, Allied World and XL Catlin and KPMG for sponsoring the presentation.

She also gave very special thanks to Jane Bielby, BFIS Administrator, who has taken on the role of organizing the intern programmes from start to finish. 113 Bermudian students have now taken part in the programme and all but one of those who have since graduated are working in insurance. The Bermuda programme started in 2001, Chicago in 2006, London in 2008 and Atlanta in 2012.
