Training Next Generation Of Church Leaders
On Sunday [Oct 11] The Anglican Church of Bermuda, Bermuda College, and the Atlantic School of Theology, will begin offering a series of lectures that it is hoped will lead to the first permanent, ecumenical, accredited training course for Christian ministry in Bermuda.
The series will begin with an open lecture entitled “The Matter of the Spirit” in the Cathedral Hall of The Bermuda Cathedral at 2pm on Sunday by Dr David Deane, Associate Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology at the Atlantic School of Theology in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The planning of the new course has been initiated by The Rt. Revd Nicholas Dill, Bishop of Bermuda, who has led a number of Ecumenical conversations at the Bermuda College to encourage Christian leaders across the island to explore the idea together.
“It’s a really exciting opportunity to be able to offer access to high quality theological education to Bermudians, without the need for them to either go it alone or go off island! This is, from the start, designed to be Ecumenical, applicable, and accessible throughout.” declared Bishop Nick.
Following the open lecture, there will be a short ‘Taster Course’ in which Dr. Deane will lead students in an exploration entitled “The Holy Spirit”.
The taster course will take place on Monday October 12th , Wednesday October 14th and Friday October 16th at the Bermuda College Blue Room starting at 6pm each evening.
It is designed to help prospective students and church leaders to explore the concept of courses offered by AST in preparing students for Christian ministry.
Dr Mark Van Den Hende, Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at the Bermuda College, said, “On behalf of the Bermuda College PACE Division; to be a part of the development of a comprehensive training platform, that literally serves the entire country, is an honour and a privilege.
“PACE Director, Tawana Flood, and her staff have met with leaders from a cross section of Bermudian church denominations to help transcend their goal of a teaching and learning program on-island into a reality. We commend the efforts of all involved as well as the leadership of Bishop Nick.”
Dr David Deane is a former Research Fellow at the Irish Research council for the Humanities and Social Sciences and received his Ph.D. from Trinity College, University of Dublin. His writings include ‘Nietzsche and Theology’ and numerous articles on a wide range of theological themes.
He is currently working on a book on Moral Theology in the service of the New Evangelization and a monograph on the Holy Spirit for Cascade books. After serving as Theologian in Residence at Colorado State University he moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2007 to take up a position at the Atlantic School of Theology.
In addition to his teaching at AST David is the director of the MA program and the new diploma program in the New Evangelization. He lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia with his wife Jennifer and daughters, Sophia [8] Chora [7] and Áine [2].
