CedarBridge Academy’s “I Am A Writer” Program
In an effort to “nurture and celebrate student writers,” CedarBridge Academy announced the winners of its excellence in writing programme with rewards and incentives.
On November 25, 2016, the year-long “I am a Writer” initiative – now in its second year – will celebrate 17 students who have achieved various levels of writing proficiency. Prizes will be given in a number of different categories, such as the “Best Writing” for all grades [9-12] and the “Overall School Best Writing” Awards.
Additional support, as part of the Read-Write-Bermuda Campaign, provides professional development resources for CedarBridge Academy teachers to enhance their skills in helping to develop student writers.
“We at CedarBridge are always looking for new ways to support our young writers. With the resources from the Read-Write-Bermuda campaign, we’ve been able to undertake a campaign that motivates, celebrates, and engages our students, starting with a declaration that they, too, are writers,” said Kalmar Richards, CedarBridge Academy Principal.
A spokesperson said, “Writing is a critical outlet for self-expression, which is why schools everywhere encourage students to write down their thoughts – from personal reflections to creative essays. But writing can be an intimidating craft, especially for teenagers who, as a group, exhibit a wide range of reading and writing abilities.
“Educators agree that the best way to get young people to write well and often is to reward their work at all stages of development. This programme at CedarBridge Academy does just that.
“The ‘I am a Writer’ initiative is supported by the Buechner Society of Bermuda, named after renowned author and theologian, Frederick Buechner, as a way to give back to Bermuda, his beloved childhood home. The initiative is a part of a national campaign called Read-Write-Bermuda.”
The Campaign has established the Read-Write-Bermuda Campaign Fund at the Bermuda Community Foundation in order to raise funds in support of Bermuda’s readers, writers, and libraries. To donate, visit the website.
