BIU President On Upcoming Court Hearings
[Updated with video] The Bermuda Industrial Union General Council and Shop Stewards met today, and said they “would like to encourage any member who has permission to be off from work on November 24th, 25th, or 26th, 2015 to attend the hearing, however any member who is scheduled to work on those dates should go to work.”
Audio of BIU President Chris Furbert:
The BIU said, “The Bermuda Industrial Union General Council and Shop Stewards met today and have decided that the BIU members should comply with the press statement that was issued by The Bermuda Trade Union Congress on Thursday November 19, 2015 which states:
“On November 19, 2015, the Unions appeared before the Chief Justice Mr. Ian Kawaley in the legal action taken by the OBA Government. The Government applied to the court for an order that attendance of Government public employees at the hearing on 24th 25th and 26th November, 2015 was unnecessary.
“The Chief Justice decided that it was arguable that every worker of each Union has a right to attend the hearing, but it was not necessary for all members to attend the hearing next week.
“As a practical matter, the Chief Justice said the court room has limited space and for that reason, it would be unnecessary for all members of each Union to be in attendance at the court hearing next week.
“Contrary to the letter dated October 23, 2015, the Chief Justice ruled that Executive Officers of each Trade Union should attend the court hearing.”
“The Bermuda Industrial Union General Council and Shop Stewards would like to encourage any member who has permission to be off from work on November 24th, 25th, or 26th, 2015 to attend the hearing, however any member who is scheduled to work on those dates should go to work.”

This should be interesting….
Cough cough… But should be able to watch on tv, even delayed, on their own time.
What a waste of court time and costs.
Now this is funny.
May have tragic consequences.
Another red herring by the BIU.
“has permission to be off”.
3 days?
Rum.
Sick days. Plenty of them. But the judge is selling the tickets. RSVP only, as he said.
Or vacation day – plenty of those too.
Have someone from HR logging who’s there against who’s called in sick
believe it or not, union members are entitled to vacation aswell, so I guess he is appealing to anyone who may have time off and are willing to support and attend.. smdh,,
You would use your vacation days to go court? Must be nice.
Sick day…vacation day…hmmm…let me see…
Gotta give him credit for his advice to the workers, on the flip side if he said EVERYBODY come court you would be B!@#$ing more.
What’s funny is that you are agreeing with government, they said union members were free to attend court, so long as they were legitimately off that day.
Oh good.
Thanks a million.
He’s expectng to lose, obviously.
I don’t think he’s expecting to lose. It would seem to be more of a strategic move on his part.
It’s intended to apply some sort of pressure, because he knows on the legality of it he will lose.
“……………however any member who is scheduled to work on those dates should go to work.”
Duh.
Hey Dreamer the workers are summonsed to go to court so by rights EVERY worker who comes under these respective Unions have the right to appear, and by rights if you dont show up to court you are issued a warrant.
Dreamer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Duh
LMFAO
EVERY worker isn’t under summons to come to court.
BIU members who are scheduled to work and do so, are safe are perfectly from arrest.
The Chief Justice decided that it was arguable that EVERY MEMBER from each Union HAS THE RIGHT TO ATTEND THE HEARING………………………………they better be thankful that the General Council and Shop Stewards pleaded with the workers because they were gonna exercise their RIGHTS.
Thank you General Council and Shop Stewards !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you really believe the nonsense you write?
Of course they have the right to. Who is arguing they don’t?
They don’t have the right to skip work, though, it they haven’t make arrangements to take time off through some sort of approved leave.
Ya, well the Dreamers who filed should’ve specified that the executives be summonsed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s like someone filing a case against your family and YOU don’t show up but your parents do.
Dreamer.
Duh
I have the right to attend court and watch, amy time I want, as long as there are seats available. But that doesn’t mean I can get out of work and go and sit in court every day. Duh. FLMFAO.
You are correct, but what you are missing is that they didn’t specify that the executives of the Unions to appear, the summonsed the workers too, so by rights the workers are eligible to go, do you think if you were summonsed to go to court you are gonna tell the judge you are working, Dreamer.
These Fools didn’t word it right.
Get ready for the strikes.
It’s well overdue.
Yeah, like it would change what you do on an average day.
They need to get a life and a job!!!
Cant think of a better life and a better job.
LMFAO
A lot of stupid comments not surprised stand strong be encouraged fight for your rights SMH
Protecting the rights of the people is a job. If we didn’t have the Union to fight for the rights of the people, God knows where Bermudians would be. Fight on Mr President. You are appreciated!! And
No I’m not a union member but I live the sinical behavior of the chosen every single day.
So the BIU resorts to bully tactics again, it used to be the employers that did this.
Deflect the facts because the facts are damning and flood the court with protestors.
Justice, eh Furball?
It USED to be the employers, our forefathers would be proud to know that ALL the injustice they had to endure, loosing property, loosing jobs and discriminative practices and now the tables are turned and their descendants are sticking it to the system that stuck it to them.
Karma is a B!@# !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are u really that silly bie? ” sticking it to the system?! ” LMFAO u realise they r sticking to themselves right? this would be down right hilarious if it wasnt so utterly stupid. We as bermudians have to be some of the most, if not thee most ignorant people on this planet. Smdh. Go u bie. Hope it all works out. Lmao
Speak for yourself, we have one of the most envied CBA’S in the Western Hemisphere and because of the Unions we have a compatible wage for our HIGH cost of living.
Are YOU that silly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yet the YunYun STILL won’t abide by it (CBA). That is why the court case.
Abide by the collective bargaining agreement that YOU signed. Then there would be no court case to miss work for.
No, if the Dreamer would’ve not wrote that threatening letter we would’ve had no case, but SpongeBob tried a BULLY tactic and it back fired on his @$$, bet he wouldn’t do that S!@# again.
Hmmmmm, what’s a Furball?
