Global Entrepreneurship Week Proclamation

November 10, 2015

The proclamation event celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week was held yesterday, with Minister of Home Affairs Michael Fahy saying that the event “helps Bermuda to promote economic empowerment, workforce development, and sustainable development” while “providing opportunities for Bermuda’s entrepreneurs.”

Minister Fahy said, “I am pleased to be here today at this proclamation event celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week.

“Global Entrepreneurship Week was originally conceived by the Marion Kauffman Foundation in partnership with Enterprise UK and the Make-Your-Mark campaign to inspire and motivate the next generation of entrepreneurs.

“This is the 8th year of GEW and it has grown extensively since its humble beginnings back in 2008. The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation as an advocate and facilitator of local entrepreneurship, felt that participating in this initiative would be of great benefit to the Bermuda community and would again demonstrate the benefits of entrepreneurship as an empowerment tool.

“Globally it is anticipated that this year over 160 countries will participate and nearly 10,000 partner organisations will plan more than 25,000 activities that directly engage more than 10 million people.

“Through the work of the BEDC, as the GEW host organisation, in partnership with the Department of Ecommerce and the Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative of Bermuda, GEW has grown significantly too.

“From 4 partners, 6 events, and 100 participants back in 2008 to 38 events, 30 partners, 5000 participants, and over 35,000 people reached last year, GEW is reaching entrepreneurs. 2015 looks to surpass those numbers.

“For Global Entrepreneurship Week 2015, the Bermuda Host Committee aims to encourage Bermuda’s young, budding, and established entrepreneurs to participate in a number of activities and local challenges, designed to encourage them to think innovatively and unleash their ideas.

“GEW also helps Bermuda to promote economic empowerment, workforce development, and sustainable development, by encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation, while providing opportunities for Bermuda’s entrepreneurs to be exposed to both local and international opportunities.

“Let it be known that Bermuda’s entrepreneurs have what it takes to excel both locally and on the global stage. In fact, in 2014 Bermuda Aerial Media took home top prize in the Global Future Agro Challenge held in Athens, Greece resulting in being invited to the White House as part of the Spark initiative. 2014 TechAward Winner Trunomi Ltd. was named as 2015 FinTech forward “Company to Watch” by American Banker and recently won the Visa Europe Collab and The Accelerator Network’s competition.

“In closing I would like to encourage any interested entrepreneur, existing or yet-to-be, to take part in the many events planned for GEW and to thank the Bermuda Host Committee, the sponsors, and partners for believing in Bermuda’s entrepreneurs and growing Bermuda’s entrepreneurial eco-system through the many events and activities planned over November.”
