Man Jailed For 30 Days For Rifle Magazines

November 20, 2015

35-year-old Jason DeCouto received a 30 day prison sentence after being convicted of possessing two Ruger Mini-14 rifle magazines and possessing 18.21 grams of cannabis.

That was the sentence handed down this afternoon [Nov 20] by Magistrate Archie Warner, and it followed a submission by DeCouto’s defence counsel Mr Craig Attridge.

Mr Attridge told the Magistrate that the rifle magazines had been brought home, unintentionally, by Mr DeCouto who, at the time, was a member of the Bermuda Regiment. The lawyer said the discovery by the police was a surprise to Mr DeCouto who had forgotten about the magazines.

The defence counsel said the possession of the weapons parts was not intentional, but was accidental, and recommended a Conditional Discharge for the firearms offence.

The Magistrate fined Mr DeCouto $800 on the drugs possession charge and handed down a thirty day prison sentence on the other charge.

The Court had previously heard that in April 2015, police had cause to stop and search Mr DeCouto who, at the time was in a car. A police sniffer dog had alerted to drugs and a search of the car turned up twists.

Police arrested Mr DeCouto and, on the same day, searched his Paget home where the two rifle magazines were found.
