Question,if we can buy turbo-charged 156bhp 1.6l sport cars, why are adults restricted to “learner bikes” and larger bikes not allowed?

    • 46 says:

Because we can’t handle 150s with 15hp?? And because people can’t follow basic rules of the road? Tbh we should be limited to 50ccs. No kits being imported. Pipes only. We need to go 50k. Nothing more is needed than 50cc to accomplish that. Sure, going over a hill will suck. But who cares. Slow down and enjoy the scenery.

    • JB says:

MATH TIME! Let’s resolve some ignorance.

So assuming the Merc GLA is the higher power 154HP model as you claim, and it weighs 3318lb, then the horsepower per pound is 154/3318 = 0.046 hp/lb.

      Let’s compare that to a typical 150cc bike (The Sym Wolf 150). Power is 15hp, weight is 266lb. Therefore hp/lp is 15/266 = 0.056 hp/lb.

BOOM. The bike will likely have a faster acceleration speed than the turbo car, as it’s power to weight ratio is approx 20% more than the merc. Sure, the merc will have a higher top speed, but who the hell can drive at more than 80km/h in bermuda for any sustained period?

So why allow a car with a higher top speed? Well, stupid hormone charged teenagers that will happily take their bikes to their top speed of roughly 100km/h aren’t going to be able to afford a merc that costs >$60,000. Sure, some people who can afford very expensive cars will no doubt drive recklessly at excessive speed, but the number of people that fall into this category are minuscule compared to the bike riders.

      • Edward Case says:

At the same time it is truly a shame that mature people with clean licenses can’t have a motorcycle of perhaps 350 or even 500cc. Same narrow minded attitude says we can’t have rentacars. Everyone suffers for the few idiots.

      • sage says:

$60,000 for a turbo benz with a power to weight ratio lower than a 150cc 4stroke, I’ll take two!

        • Onion Juice says:

Ill by a plane ticket and go to the dealership, get one for $20,000, ship it for $7,000.

          • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL says:

Actually, any car over I believe 12k will cost you 75% duty, not to mention the other boat and dock charges you will incur. Trust, you will pay more that 40k!

        • Bermyman says:

Try $35k and then pay import duty. There is an initial 75 percent rate on the first $12,000 of the vehicle’s value, then 150 percent on any amount exceeding $12,000 from then on.

Really shows the level of intelligence we are dealing with when you don’t understand how Bermuda’s taxation system works, yet you feel yourself competent to provide commentary on our economy and fiscal system on a regular basis.

    • JUNK YARD DOG says:

It is always the innocent who suffer for the guilty, it is easier for the blue suits to pass blanket laws to legislate the lawless, while the rest of us pay the price of inequity.

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

Crazy! We can have cars like this for use on roads better suited for golf carts.

  3. Oh,I see now says:

It’s ah whole new world……sung to one of the Disney movies themes, darn I forgot which one.

  4. Truth is killin' me... says:

Govt. better fix these shoddy roads before I pour my hard earned money into a car like that to end up with shot axels after a few years time!
