Men’s, Women’s Senior Rugby League Matches
Bermuda Rugby’s Senior League action resumes this weekend at the National Sports Centre’s North Field, with the Teachers a win ahead at the top of the Women’s League and the other three teams still firmly in the race, with only six points separating top from bottom.
The Men’s League is currently a three horse race, with Police only a point ahead of Renegades. Teachers are still within striking distance at 14 points, but will need help from the fourth-placed Mariners if they are to take back the difference.
League leaders Police will be hoping to follow the success of last weekend’s victory in the Duckett Memorial when they host Mariners in the 10th annual Paul Marsden Memorial Trophy, named in honour of Police Constable 2206 Paul Marsden, who tragically died on the rugby field while playing for the Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club on January 22, 2006.
PC Marsden was a well-respected competitor who personified all that is good with the core values of rugby, a “fine member” of the Police Service and of the Police Rugby Club, and a “good friend to many still in service and playing for the team.”
Bermuda Rugby Football Union President, Superintendent Sean Field-Lament said, “The match promises to be an emotional occasion. Invariably it will be played in the spirit that Paul epitomized.”
Following the game, there will be refreshments at the Police Recreation Club [PRC] in Prospect. All rugby players, supporters, friends and associates are invited to the PRC to take part in the celebration of PC Marsden’s life and contribution to Bermuda rugby.
Upcoming matches include the Renegades vs Teachers and Police vs Mariners in both the Men’s and Women’s leagues.
