Young “Crafty Angels” Raise Money For Charity
Three local children have managed to raise $500 for charity thanks to their “Crafty Angels” endeavour, using the funds to personally shop for food items for the food store at the Coalition for the Protection of Children.
The children – sisters 7-year-old Sarah and 10-year-old Emily, along with their cousin Sebastian, also 10-years-old – used a range of materials to create items such as magnets, thumb tacks, hair elastics, bookmarks, pom-pom flowers, recycled bottle vases, and decorated pencils, under their “Crafty Angel” moniker.
Besides raising funds for a good cause, Laura Davis, the mother of Sarah and Emily, said the children were also helpfully exposed to mathematics, marketing, sales, “and of course the philanthropic element.”
Ms. Davis said, “We started this exercise when Sarah was recovering from some surgery in September, and I gave her some scraps of material to turn into fabric covered buttons to keep her busy.”
“With the help of her sister, Emily, and cousin, Sebastian Kempe, they created the idea to become ‘Crafty Angels’ and worked on turning the fabric covered buttons into magnets, thumb tacks, hair elastics, and bookmarks to sell at the Bermuda High School Holiday Bazaar in December.
“The kids brainstormed some other ideas for crafts to sell, and with a focus on using recycled materials, worked on making pom-pom flowers, recycled bottle vases, and decorated pencils.”
“The day of the BHS Holiday Bazaar, the three worked so hard to sell their crafts on the day, and were extremely pleased to take in just short of $1,000 in sales. They had committed to donating 70 percent of their sales to charities in Bermuda, and chose the Coalition for the Protection of Children to support.
“With $500 to spend, they went shopping to find out how far the amount would go toward stocking the food store at the Coalition, learning much along the way; they were most surprised at the price of diapers and baby formula.”
“Overall, this exercise has taught the kids a lot about so many different things – not only following through on an idea, but there was mathematics, marketing, sales, and of course the philanthropic element. They are all keen to continue this again next year.”
Well done guys! I know you worked so hard on this – it was fun to see it all come together. So proud of you all – keep it up!
Well done Sarah, Emily and Sebastian – a meaningful way to express your generosity. May this continue throughout your lifetime.
Bought some “snowballs” at the BHS Fair. Great stuff. Well done!
