Alun Thomas To Race In Sahara Ultra Marathon
Alun Thomas, lead underwriter at Amlin Bermuda, has signed up for the Marathon des Sables, a race known as the “toughest footrace on earth,” with the ultra-marathon run in six days over a 156 miles [251km] course in the blistering heat of the Sahara Desert.
Mr. Thomas, who has been training hard for the event, is participating in the name of the Michelle Zalkin Scholarship, which offers exceptional students with a proven interest in child protection the opportunity to undertake the UCL Masters in Paediatrics and Child Health.

The scholarship is named after Mr. Thomas’ friend Dr. Michelle Zalkin, who passed away from cancer two years ago, leaving behind a husband and two children. It was her family and friends that decided to establish a charity in her name, shaping her legacy in helping to assist students to become qualified doctors in the field in which she excelled.
According to the Marathon des Sables website, “Known simply as the MdS, the race is a gruelling multi-stage adventure through a formidable landscape in one of the world’s most inhospitable climates – the Sahara desert.
“The rules require you to be self-sufficient, to carry with you on your back everything except water that you need to survive. You are given a place in a tent to sleep at night, but any other equipment and food must be carried.”

In describing the conditions for the 156 mile race, the website notes that “it will be very hot” as “midday temperatures in the Sahara can get up to 120 Fahrenheit.”

Certainly a tremendous undertaking, I pray he does well, and all efforts continue to serve those in need of health care.
Good Luck Alun !!!!!
Hi Alun. Just introducing myself as a fellow Welsh competitor. A friend who lives in Bermuda sent me this article. I will be alongside you (probably far behind you!) as the oldest British woman walking this year. I will look out for the buff. I will have mine too! I wish you every success in your adventure and fundraising. Look out for Beatrice on the BIB 998.
That sounds wicked. Good luck.
Best of luck Mr. Thomas! A few of my friends were hoping to do that in a few years time. I know you can do it! Even when you get physically tired stay mentally tough! Alright enough rambling Good luck again.
