Bermuda Delegation To Attend RIMS Conference
Close to 200 representatives of Bermuda’s re/insurance industry and affiliates will join government leaders and regulatory officials in a delegation headed to next month’s Risk and Insurance Management Society [RIMS] annual conference and exhibition in San Diego, California.
The Bermuda Business Development Agency [BDA] is coordinating Bermuda’s presence at the prestigious April 10–13 event, which every year attracts close to 10,000 risk-management professionals, as well as senior executives and other decision-makers from a wide range of industries, plus some 400 exhibitors.
Bermuda’s VIP delegation in 2015 comprised officials of government, the BDA, BMA, and the island’s re/insurance industry
“RIMS, and the networking carried out around it, make this a vitally important business-development event for the risk-management industry, and the BDA works to facilitate those connections,” says BDA CEO Ross Webber.
“Our significant ‘Team Bermuda’ presence at RIMS every year allows our domicile to demonstrate its strength, value and leadership as one of the world’s top-three re/insurance centres, the largest property catastrophe centre, the biggest captives jurisdiction, and home of the most insurance-linked securities listings. RIMS is a showcase for our excellence in all these areas.”
Bermuda’s government will be well represented at RIMS ’16 by Premier Michael Dunkley, Finance Minister ET [Bob] Richards and Economic Development Minister Dr Grant Gibbons. The government delegation will meet with RIMS president Julie Pemberton, tour the conference exhibition floor, visit Bermuda industry booths and attend various industry events.
The ministers will be joined at RIMS by Bermuda Monetary Authority [BMA] CEO Jeremy Cox and Director, Licensing & Authorisations, Shelby Weldon. Representatives from numerous Bermuda-based companies will also participate, including: Aon, Appleby, Arch Insurance Group, Artex, Arthur J. Gallagher, Aspen Insurance, AXIS Insurance, Beecher Carlson, Bermuda Commercial Bank, Butterfield Bank, Canopius Underwriting Bermuda, Chubb, Clarien Bank, Conyers, Endurance, EY, HSBC, JLT, KPMG, Markel Bermuda, Marsh Inc, PwC, R&Q Quest Management Services, Willis Towers Watson, XL Caitlin, and Zurich.

The hallmark Bermuda booth, a two-storey structure with island architectural styling, will be prominently positioned at the conference hall, with BDA, BMA and industry representatives on hand to answer questions about the jurisdiction and meet with prospective new companies interested in establishing a presence in Bermuda.
“Evolving international regulatory standards is anticipated to be a hot topic at this year’s RIMS conference and the Authority will be happy to answer any questions that prospective Bermuda insurers may have in this regard,” says the BMA’s Weldon. “RIMS is easily the largest and most important event for the worldwide risk-transfer industry and the Authority is pleased to once again contribute to Bermuda’s jurisdictional effort at RIMS.”
New this year will be a structured series of pre-booked “Bermuda Speed-Networking Sessions” staged at the conference centre. Scheduled throughout the three-day event, each hour-long meeting will pair parties interested in learning more about setting up a company in Bermuda with key island experts such as brokers, auditors, insurance managers, bankers and regulatory officials who can answer specific questions and detail the jurisdiction’s advantages.

“Prospects will be able to register in advance for these sessions and gain access to our top industry experts via brief, face-to-face group meetings to learn about the jurisdiction,” explains BDA Business Development Manager for Risk Solutions, Jereme Ramsay. “
We’ve been doing this in an informal way for many years, but we thought it beneficial to market this as a real Bermuda plus at RIMS. We’re the only jurisdiction to have a significant delegation at the event, and all our industry members are working together to showcase Bermuda’s suite of risk-transfer services.”
The BDA will also host its annual networking reception, an invitation-only event slated for the evening of Tuesday, April 12 for key industry representatives and other executives.
