March 30, 2016

The Bermuda National Athletic Association’s 2016 Carifta Games team returned with one medal, with Sakari Famous claiming a bronze medal in the high jump.

Donna Raynor, President of the Bermuda National Athletics Association, said, “We knew we had a young and inexperienced team but I feel they all performed at their best.”

“We had several Personal Best performances, with Lynsey Palmer in the Under 18 Girls 3000m, Elisha Darrell in the under 18 Boy’s High Jump, Djymon Ried in the Under 18 Boy’s 100m and making the finals, Stephan Dill Under 18 Boy’s 100m, Tyler Smith in the Under 20 Boys 5000m race that was full of confusion with the track official miscounting laps.

Ms Raynor went on to say, “Alexis Trott just missing out 3rd place until the last 2 jumps in the Under 20 Girls Long Jump placing 4th, while Ethan Philip made the finals in the Under 20 Boy’s Long Jump.”

“All in all we are in the rebuilding stage and we will meet and discuss our strategic plan going forward. Several of the events had record numbers like 18 in the Girls 3000m, 18 in the Under 18 High Jump and the number of records that were broken this year in the games. Each year these games get tougher and tougher but we have to prepare ourselves to be ready for the tougher competition.”

Congratulations to the athletes and the BNAA. Our Track and Field situation is in desperate need of public and private support! Without it we should not look forward to consistent success.
