Consumer Price Index: Inflation Increased 0.1%
Consumers paid 1.1% more in April 2016 than they did a year ago for the basket of goods and services included in the Consumer Price Index [CPI]. The level of inflation increased 0.1 percentage points from the 1.0% measured in March 2016.
The Consumer Price Index report said, “Between March 2016 and April 2016, the average cost of goods and services in the CPI increased by 0.9%. The all-items index jumped up to 101.1 in April. This means that the basket of goods and services that cost $100.00 in April 2015 now costs $101.10.
“The Fuel & Power sector continued to have a strong impact in the overall inflation rate, falling 10.0% year-over-year. The major driver in this sector was the lower cost of electricity.
“The Transport & Foreign Travel sector decreased 3.3% year-over-year as average airfares declined 17.4%.”
