Chefs Create Eco Christmas Crib
[Written by Stephen Wright]
Local chef Bryan Rebello and his house-mates have once again spread holiday cheer by creating an eco-friendly Christmas crib at their apartment in Pembroke.
Bryan Rebello, Prinol Dias, Mervin Figueredo, Dixon Lopes, and Abhijit Perera spent more than a month crafting the intricate 12ft Nativity scene.
The crib, made entirely from repurposed materials such as eggshells, foam boxes, cardboard, wood shavings, and dried tree branches, depicts Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
Prinol Dias, a pastry chef at Crow Lane Bakery in Hamilton, said the project was spearheaded by Mr Rebello, a pastry chef at Huckleberry restaurant at the Rosedon Hotel.
“Bryan believes in making the best out of waste and reusing things in a very efficient way, which is good for the environment and the pocket!” Mr Dias told Bernews.
“Bryan works long hours, but during the Christmas period, making the crib is almost his priority. All the house-mates – Dixon, Abhijit, Mervin, and I – assist Bryan in whatever way we can.
“We focus on planning, communication, and teamwork to bring this beautiful crib together each year.”
The tradition of building Christmas cribs is a cherished custom in Mr Rebello, Mr Dias, Mr Lopes and Mr Perera’s hometown of Vasai, Mumbai, India. Mr Figueredo is from Goa, India.
Mr Dias explained that creating the crib has become a way for the house-mates to feel connected to their roots.
“In Vasai, Mumbai, it’s a tradition to make a crib each year to celebrate Christmas together,” he said.
“We’re living [in Bermuda], but making our crib brings us together and makes us miss our home a little less during this beautiful time.”
The eco-friendly masterpiece is proudly displayed in their living room and is open to locals to view during the Christmas season.
The Christmas crib can be found at 20 Marsh Folly Road in Pembroke.
