Eight Interns Successfully Complete Programme
Eight technology interns have successfully completed the Technology Leadership Forum [TLF] 2016 Summer Internship Programme.
During the 12-week programme, Luis Correia, Michelle Butterfield, Kyle Swan, Zine’ Franklin, Taiva Paynter, Steve Lawrence, Victoria Santos and Brandon Franke acquired experience in the information and communications technology [ICT] industry through classroom learning, fieldwork as interns at participating companies, and a team project in which they came up with a concept, pitched it and then developed it.
The eight students were presented with graduation certificates from Economic Development Permanent Secretary William Francis, TLF Chair Sandra DeSilva and guest speaker Kim Perdikou at the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dingy Club, with six students achieving Merit.
For this year’s project the interns developed a prototype of a web-application which can provide real-time traffic updates and information, the ability to arrange ride sharing and vehicle diagnostics.
The TLF, a registered charity, was founded nine years ago in response to a need for qualified Bermudian talent in the ICT field. It is public/private partnership between the Department of E-Commerce and private company sponsors.
The TLF’s prime objectives are to encourage dialogue, address challenges and propose action steps, mentor ICT students and young professionals and to be a networking group among peers.
Program Director Coral Wells stated “I am pleased with the direction the TLF has taken and with the caliber of students and technology professionals the programme has produced over the course of the last nine years. I am elated to see increased numbers of local, home-grown talent on-island.”
In the coming year the TLF intends on expanding their outreach to include primary through high school aged youth based programmes designed to encourage students to get involved with technology at an early age.
Permanent Secretary Francis congratulated the graduates on behalf of Dr. Grant Gibbons, Minister of Economic Development on completing the program stating “The 2016 TLF Internship graduates are well on their way and there are no limits to where they may go as they build their networks and knowledge base, continue to develop their skillsets, and become more involved in ICT careers.”
Keynote speaker Kim Perdikou engaged the graduates, and supporting guests with an informative, witty and honest address encouraging the students to celebrate their authenticity, to live their dreams and to be more than even they ever expected.
“Technology changed my life” she said.” It’s amazing being here in Bermuda in such an innovative and creative atmosphere. We are here celebrating these eight young minds that are geared up to change the world. They are the future of technology here in Bermuda and that future looks bright.”
