Somersfield Academy’s ‘Walk/Run Our Journey’

November 22, 2016

As part of its 25th anniversary events, Somersfield Academy is getting set to host ‘Walk/Run Our Journey’ on Sunday, December 4.

The event will get underway at 9.00am for runners and 9.15am for walkers, starting at Tivoli Field and ending at Somersfield Academy. Registration costs $30 for adults and $25 for students under 17, with registration available online.

A spokesperson said, “As part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, Somersfield Academy invites you to Walk/Run Our Journey. We will start at Tivoli where it all began and finish here at our campus in Devonshire. This is a 5.39 mile walk/run. We encourage everyone to participate.

“While this event is open to the entire community, we are looking for great representation from the Somersfield community of parents, students and alumni. After you complete your walk or run, a light nutritious breakfast will be waiting for you.

“The route will start at Tivoli Field, located on Middle Road in Warwick, to the start of the railway trail off of Khyber Pass heading east via railway trails to South Road. Remain on South Road to Brighton Hill, continue up Brighton Hill to Watlington Road East, down Chaingate Hill, safely cross the street and finish at our campus.

“All registrants will be eligible for a $500 travel voucher.

“Somersfield Academy was the brain child of a group of visionary parents who believed that Bermuda needed a Montessori school whose enrollment age went beyond the pre-school years. Montessori Academy, as we were formerly known, became a reality with the official opening and ribbon cutting by Landy Langley, the then Governors wife, at “Tivoli-on-the-Hill” on Friday 6th September, 1991.

“On that first day, Tivoli opened its doors to 70 students between the ages of 3 and 12 years of age. The first Principal was Mrs. Sighle FitzGerald. The Montessori Academy became very popular very quickly and it was not long before we had to search for a new location.

“The National’s Sports Club was deemed the perfect setting to relocate the school and on September 7th, 2001, we opened at our current site with 127 students. The school name was subsequently changed to Somersfield Academy in 2002 to reflect that the land we are now located on was formerly owned by the Somers Isles Company who had originally purposed this site as “School Land”.

“The Somesfield Isles Company owned several plots of land that they envisioned as “School Land”. Since those early days, our enrollment numbers have continually increased to where we can now boast a student population of 495, as well as an expanded educational programme that includes the I.B. Middle Years Program, introduced in 2004.

“Beyond our rapid growth over these first 25 years, most significantly, Somersfield Academy is recognized and respected as one of Bermuda’s finest educational institutions.

“This year’s 25th Anniversary celebrations were fabulously launched last June at the Governor’s residence. Our next major event will be our “Walk/Run Our Journey” from Tivoli to Somersfield! We invite you to join us as we celebrate this milestone by participating in the medley of events and supporting our school’s continued development.”
