Hamilton Staff Donate Time With AC Endeavour

December 14, 2016

A group of employees from Hamilton Insurance Group, the Bermuda-based holding company for insurance and reinsurance operations, and Hamilton Re, the Company’s platform in Bermuda, recently spent an afternoon donating their services in support of the America’s Cup Endeavour Programme.

As a corporate sponsor of the America’s Cup Endeavour Programme, Hamilton has provided funds for two Toyota HiAce vans that are used to transport students from local schools across Bermudato the programme’s two forts located in the east and in the west of the Island.

On Monday, December 5, coinciding with the United Nations International Volunteer Day, twelve Hamilton team members rolled up their sleeves and tackled two projects at the America’s Cup Endeavour Programme’s East Fort in St. George’s.

The first was to beautify the building where the experiential education programme takes place. This included paint touch ups and a general cleaning of the facility. The second was a landscaping and beach cleanup that transformed the area used to launch the Hobie Wave catamarans, RS Fevas, and O’Pen BICs that students use to hone their sailing skills.

“There is something very satisfying about a day of a hard manual labour, when at the end of that day you can see a very tangible result of your efforts, and knowing those efforts really helped out the Endeavour Programme,” said Adam Williams, Hamilton Re Vice President, Finance. “Plus, I got to wield a machete, something I rarely get to do as an accountant.

“I was impressed that the America’s Cup Endeavour Programme is much more than a sailing programme. It also teaches children about important topics such as environmental issues facing our oceans, being sun smart and nutrition.”

Mr. Williams’ comments were echoed by his colleagues Nelia Cabral, Senior Underwriting Assistant at Hamilton Re, and Sam Thomsen, Head of Software Development and IT at Hamilton Re.

“Working together with my colleagues and the America’s Cup Endeavour Programme team to accomplish projects that will benefit hundreds of children was rewarding,” said Mrs. Cabral.

“What a great day!” said Mr. Thomsen. “So satisfying to get outside, work with our hands and add sweat equity to such a worthy cause.”

A second group of Hamilton employees will head to West Endeavour Fort in Dockyard in February 2017 for another afternoon of improving the facilities used by Endeavour’s young student sailors.

The America’s Cup Endeavour Programme’s experiential learning curriculum leverages sailing and the America’s Cup to expose Bermuda students aged 9 to 12 to STEAM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math] studies.

The curriculum includes a broad range of modules from health and nutrition to the innovative science and technology behind sailing and yacht design.
