NMAC Study On Food Allergies & Sensitivities

May 19, 2017

Northshore Medical & Aesthetics Center [NMAC], under the direction of Dr. Kyjuan Brown, MD Medical Director, and Dr. Amani Flood, NMD Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, recently conducted a retrospective study on what effects food allergies and sensitivities have on their patient population.

Patients with skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatological diseases were offered food sensitivity testing which included a detailed food sensitivity and wellness report.

Patients were further counseled by Dr. Flood on how to carry out the other recommendations in the report and the importance of eliminating the foods they are allergic/sensitive to; for a prescribed period of time.

A spokesperson said, “It is a long-held natural medicine belief that most if not all autoimmune conditions begin in the gastrointestinal system, commonly referred to as the gut. It is a known medical fact that 70% of the immune system is found in and around the gut.

“Scientists have now come to understand through research that a healthy digestive tract plays an important role in regulating the immune system. The theory behind this is that by eating foods that you are sensitive or allergic to on a consistent basis, your immune system can become so dysregulated that it can eventually fail to recognize healthy tissue and turn on its own self.

“Autoimmune disease by definition is when the body is attacking itself,” says Dr. Brown. “Through our research and this retrospective analysis we are able to see that there is indeed a connection between food sensitives/allergies and many of the health conditions that we commonly treat.”

Food Allergy Bermuda May 2017

“We analyzed the results of 40 patients and found that after eliminating the foods which they were sensitive/allergic to:

  • 1. 83% noticed an improvement in their symptoms/condition showing a slight to great improvement.
  • 2. 56% noted that symptoms resolved entirely.
  • 3. 42% of these patients stopped the medications that were prescribed for their condition/symptom’s, after receiving the food report and wellness plan.
  • 4. 67% of patients noticed additional benefits which included, improved energy and vitality, alertness, skin texture and clarity, reduced anxiety, less congestion, and resolution of their gas and bloating.
  • 5. 58% of patient’s noticed weight loss

“After reviewing the results, I was not surprised, as this was what we were seeing in the clinic,” says Dr. Brown. “Many of my skin disease patients noticed an improvement in their skin condition with many conditions clearing up all together.”

“Our visiting Consultant Rheumatologist Dr. Vivian Bunin also noticed that many of her patients suffering from autoimmune conditions such as Lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis were able to withdraw some of their medications and noticed an improvement in their condition and in their quality of life.”

“Some even noticed a remission of their conditions,” Dr. Brown added.

“The knowledge of the connection between food and auto immune system is nothing new,” says Dr. Amani Flood, Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. “The new component is how we have integrated the two here at Northshore Medicine & Aesthetics Center.

“It has been our company’s aim is to assess the whole person not just their illness, and a big part of that is assessing what they are eating.

“As a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine my training is centered around the whole person, and assisting patients through lifestyle and dietary changes to help reverse chronic disease and/or improve patient symptoms.”

“In addition to the food allergy program, NMC’s wellness department has a successful Weight Loss Program – The B-Lean Weight Loss Club, and a Diabetic Reversal Program. Also, Dr. Flood is just launching “The Healing Ark” Program which is a 40-day self-guided course to achieving optimal personal health the natural way.”
