Christmas Boat Parade Postponed Until 2018
The City of Hamilton announced today [Nov 9] that the Christmas Boat Parade, scheduled for Saturday December 9th, has been postponed until December 2018.
“This was always going to be a difficult transitional year for the Christmas Boat Parade”, explained Mayor Charles Gosling.
“We agreed to take over from the founders who had organised the parade for the past 20 years because we believe we can grow this into a major event for the City and for tourism on the Island.
“The Corporation and the founders have been working together and we regret postponing this year’s parade, but there are several issues beyond our control that will impact the overall event quality if we were to proceed this December. One of those issues is the low number of participants who have registered to enter the parade.

“The other is that the company who provide the fireworks display for the boat parade and many other local events, are no longer offering this service, and we didn’t feel the parade could proceed without the magnificent fireworks finale we have come to enjoy over the years. We will now regroup and double our efforts to address these issues and come back next year with a bigger and better parade”.
“We wish to thank the companies who so generously provide sponsorship funds and also to those boat owners who did sign up for this year’s parade. We want to assure them, as well as the public, that we are committed to delivering a first-class event in 2018. I hope our many Christmas Boat Parade fans can be patient and I urge all boat owners to plan to participate in 2018”.

More to this than meets the ‘detinator’……
For a little tiny place Bermuda has always put on a whopping good boat parade. IMO the parade has never had the promotion overseas that it deserves. We have the advantage over so many US boating towns in that Hamilton Harbour is an excellent venue with viewing sites all around the route & temperatures close to Christmas which are not too cold to be out for extended periods.
The COH & BTA need to get busy working together to make it much more than a locals event.
How disappointing !!
I will admit that I haven’t taken a second to read the article and I don’t care why but I am pissed. That is it for me. I just spent $80+ on decorations and had family flying down to participate. I know of others that rented boats and organized parties.
I had a feeling that the event would be average at best this year because the advertising and promotion was pitiful compared you years gone by. They had two years to get their act together.
I will consult my tachnical advisors and revert back
The cancellation is regrettable. But you can use your decorations next year if you wish. Hopefully your family that is visiting will still enjoy their stay.
More important issues face this small country.
Not really a miss!!
Whaaaaat!!!
It’s truly amazing the effect a new government has on a country isn’t it?
Pagan festivals.
This isn’t an issue that you can pin on the PLP, honestly. Come on now.
Sorry to read this as I was helping with decorating and planning a boat.
I don’t think not having fireworks is a good enough reason. Also in organizing an event not everyone has signed up one month before the event. This is such a wonderful event which truely has one of the largest spectators. Hopefully panning has started now for next year!
none of this make sense. Bermuda has a lot of boats. I know many people who love to decorate their boats for Christmas. Why does this have to be so complicated?
Maybe people just aren’t into the spirit this year. In case you haven’t noticed, Bermuda is kinda “circling the drain at the moment.” Sad but true.
Seems easy enough. Sign up, decorate your boat, show up on date. I don’t understand it either but what do I know.
St. George’s Town and Eastern parishes are you interested in picking this up? Restaurants n bars? Late night shopping? Food trucks n please come back Black Horse authentic island food n Harrington Sound mussels. Taxii cabs drive in the tourists? Many economic and enjoyment opportunities. Suggest participating boat owners/families/businesses get sponsorship for civic participation and potential revenue from potential area businesses. The experts could fine tune these initial ideas.
Taxi drivers are going to shuttle people all the way from the central parishes for free are they? Boat owners are going to get free fuel to run down to the East End & back are they? What benefit does a business get from sponsoring a boat? Are they going to use free money?
Dreamer. No clue as to what is involved in producing such an event.
This really sucks I️ has planned to come from California to surprise my family this is unbelievable
City of hamilton got involved when? Booooyyyyy it’s Queens water to the high tide mark. Ahhhmmmm gonna doit anyway!
Fingers crossed that this will take place in 2018. The fireworks were always something to look forward to.
Hats off to those who worked hard to make the previous boat parades a success.
So does that mean there will be no fireworks for New Years either? I New Years Eve cancelled too? Someone at the Corporation should check on that and let the public know so they can plan an alternative….or are we postponing New Years till next year as well? Hmph!
Im just saying…
I think the word is cancelled rather than “postponed”….
I guess 2018 boat parade will be “postponed” until 2019, and so forth.
2017 boat parade is CANCELLED
You would be correct. Unless it’s going to held at a later date like January or February it is cancelled for 2017
Be honest and straight-forward with public … Christmas parade was CANCELLED. Postponement of event usually scheduled to later date … not 12 months later!
Typical I knew when CoH took this over they would mash it up…..
Save your money folks, the new govt is going to make you wish you did!
Let’s hope when they figure out what they r gonna do in 2018.
They figure out something with parking for those who like to watch on harbor road where they don’t get ticketed
Am dissapointef as I had reserved a room at the old inverurie and know of several others who had done also
Lost revenue in a slow time
Not to mention Belmont also
