Kiwanians To Observe “Kiwanis Week”

January 20, 2018

From January 20 through January 27, 2018 the Kiwanis organizations in Bermuda will observe annual “Kiwanis Week” with many events.

A spokesperson said, “Kiwanis International, including the entire Kiwanis organization in Bermuda will mark the annual “Kiwanis Week”, from January 20 through January 27, 2018.

“The clubs here will hold various functions during the week, and will start the observances by attending the St David’s Seventh-Day Adventist Church, on Saturday, January 20.

“There are two adult Kiwanis Clubs in Bermuda, in Hamilton and in St George’s; two Key Clubs [for secondary school students], at the Berkeley Institute, and at Cedarbridge Academy; and one K-Kids Club [for primary school students], at the St George’s Preparatory School.

“The Kiwanis Club of Hamilton was chartered in 1971, and the Kiwanis Club of St George’s received its charter in 1988. Kiwanis itself was founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan, and a year later a club was formed in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, making the organization a truly ‘international’ one.

“The main mantra for Kiwanis is “serving the children of the world”, and in the past – through service projects and financial contributions – Kiwanians worldwide have led the fight to eliminate iodine deficiency in children around the world; its latest campaign has been against Maternal Neonatal Tetanus [MNT], and at last report there were only 15 countries remaining where that pediatric threat exists.

“Here in Bermuda, Kiwanis clubs have joined the fight against asthma, cancer, diabetes, and illiteracy in children. When children’s needs appear Kiwanians, with their structured programs, rise to the challenge.

“Kiwanians in Bermuda also partner with other registered charities and organizations to help the adult population by doing outreach community service for them each year, in order to give support to our residents who are in dire need of assistance.

“Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world – one child, and one community, at a time.”
