January 22, 2018

[Updated] A man has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault “on the grounds” of the Royal Bermuda Regiment, with the police confirming that a female soldier was “reported to have been assaulted by a male soldier,” while the Regiment has confirmed that they “referred an allegation from a soldier to the Bermuda Police Service for investigation.”

A police spokesperson said, “On Sunday 21st January police received a report from the Royal Bermuda Regiment [RBR] that a sexual assault had occurred on the grounds of the RBR the night before.

“A female soldier was reported to have been assaulted by a male soldier. A man has been arrested in connection with the complaint and he was later released on police bail while the investigation continues.”

Update 4.51pm: The Royal Bermuda Regiment said, “It would be inappropriate and potentially prejudicial to any inquiry to comment on disciplinary matters.

“We can, however, confirm that we have referred an allegation from a soldier to the Bermuda Police Service for investigation.

“We are an open and transparent organisation and we demand the highest standard of conduct at every level.

“The RBR takes complaints from our soldiers very seriously and we are cooperating fully with the police inquiry.”
