Dog Owner Warns Others About Ferry Reach
A dog lover is warning others that someone appears to be leaving poison around Ferry Reach, which could harm the animals.
Gavin Shorto’s family took their two dogs to Ferry Reach Park for a walk around 6pm on Monday.
Mr Shorto said one of his dogs “ate a little quarter-slice of bread, two inches by two inches, covered with some kind of greyish spread, with a penny on top. We found three of them, each placed at the base of one of the casuarinas about a hundred yards beyond the gate at the roundabout at the western end of the park.”
After seeing his dog ingest one of the poisoned food, he rushed his beloved dog to the vet. The dog was then treated with an emetic to induce vomiting.
His pet should be okay, but Mr Shorto warns, “I worry about other dog owners, many of whom walk their dogs there in the evening and on weekends. They’d be wise to avoid the area for the time being.
“Even though the poison is mild, the penny is very dangerous to them. After six weeks or so in their stomachs, it turns toxic and can kill them.
“My dog has one that is stuck in a fold in his stomach. It has to come out. If we can’t get it out by feeding him big meals to stretch his stomach, it will have to be taken out surgically.”
Mr Shorto assumes the penny may be used to protect the poison from the rain, but that just raises the danger level for any dogs winds up eating the bread.
He adds his wife has notified the police so they can investigate the situation.
What kind of psychopath would do this? We have raised some heinous humans haven’t we?! This is disgusting and shameful. What is wrong with some people? Seriously. Devils Isle really is a good name for us.
Yes beware and keep dogs on a leash as the law requires to avoid them eating anything they are not supposed to !
Knowing the Shorto family, I would imagine the dogs were on leashes. Even on a leash, a dog can pick up something from the ground very quickly.
Someone trying to kill the feral chickens.
Highly doubt the police will do anything
Have any enquiries been made with Conservation Services? This is the method they use to poison feral chickens.
This can kill wildlife too, I suspect.
Hope your sweet little dog is OK
nah man i cant imagine this. give some other guess as to why the bread there and penny are there
Sad and cruel but pet owners just don’t get it…
Pick up after your pet.
The penny? That’s an old one.
I have heard that Conservation Services are leaving poison around to kill the chickens.. it is also killing the birds.
@Anne, I’m not so sure if that’s accurate. My understanding is that they don’t poison the chickens, they basically make them woozy and they show down. Then the guys break their necks.
Unfortunately there are some nasty people in this world. Something like this has to be deliberate, but I can’t understand what kind of person gets their jollies by doing something so cruel. As said before, keep your dog on a leash which you should be doing anyway.
Bingo!!! Dog on leash please. Conservation Services do not use such a method to kill feral chickens. They are well aware that other animals will consume such a bait!
They do put some sort of substance on bread to make the chickens “drunk”, then they break their necks. I’ve seen them do it many times. You’re right that they shouldn’t put it where dogs are, but you never know.
Dogs on or off leash is irrelevant. Nobody has the right to do this. The low life degenerate that is doing this is very very dangerous, it requires a very sick , evil person to do such a thing and that person walks freely amongst us. What if they decide they don’t like children next and start tampering with food in stores, there are endless possibilities. I can say this though, that if I caught them, they would be eating the traps they laid. All of them.
Please, please report if you witness this or if you maybe know who has done this. We are absolutely horrified that this is happening. Please watch your Dogs.
