Carriage Incident: Police Confirm Man’s Death
[Updated] Police and first responders have been dispatched to an “incident involving a horse and carriage” in Devonshire, with police saying that “initial information suggests that one person has been seriously injured.”
A police spokeperson said, “At around 3.20pm today [March 8] police and first responders were dispatched to a reported incident involving a horse and carriage that occurred in the Brighton Hill Road, Devonshire area.
“Details are limited at this time. However, initial information suggests that one person has been seriously injured.
“Traffic diversions are anticipated in the area and motorists are advised to take alternate routes if possible.
“An update will be provided when more information becomes available.”
Update 4.12pm: The police are expected to provide further details shortly.
Update 4.56pm: Police confirm the male carriage driver was injured and “is believed to be in a serious condition” and “both horses involved had to be euthanized.”
A police spokesperson said, “Around 3:20pm today [March 8th] police and first responders were dispatched to a reported serious incident involving a carriage pulled by two horses that occurred on Brighton Hill Road in Devonshire, near the junction with Middle Road.
“It appears that no other vehicles were involved.
“The male carriage driver was injured and transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance.
“He is believed to be in a serious condition and a medical update is anticipated in due course.
“Both horses involved had to be euthanized. Traffic diversions in the area are still in effect as the scene is being processed by the relevant police personnel.”

Update 6.54pm: The police have now confirmed the death of 69-year-old Howard Charles.
A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 69-year-old Mr. Howard Charles and extends sincere condolences to his family and friends.
“Mr. Charles was seriously injured in an incident that occurred around 3:20pm today [March 8th] on Brighton Hill Road in Devonshire involving the carriage he was driving, pulled by two horses.
“He was rushed to hospital via ambulance but sadly, later pronounced dead.
“Traffic diversions in the Brighton Hill Road, Middle Road Devonshire area are no longer in effect and the investigation continues regarding the circumstances of this incident.
“Witnesses or persons with any relevant information are urged to contact the main police telephone number 295-0011.”
