Walk For Change On International Women’s Day

March 4, 2018

A ‘walk for change’ will be held on March 8th — which is International Women’s Day [IWD] — starting at City Hall at 12:30 p.m.

A spokesperson said, “International Women’s Day [IWD] is founded on collaboration and powered by collective efforts. This is the third year Bermuda will be hosting an event in support of IWD on the steps of City Hall on March 8 at 12:30 p.m. IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.

“The day also focuses on the clear momentum that is building towards gender parity. Now, more than ever, there’s a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. Hence the theme this year is #PressforProgress.

“We are also suggesting participants wear the color purple which symbolizes the historic plight of the suffragettes. Motivational and inspiring speeches/musicians will begin the peaceful and positive event followed by a short walk around Hamilton. Brown bag lunches will also be for sale at $15.00.

“A photo booth will be available for participants to capture the moment and share a special word or message on what IWD means to them.

“This year’s event was formed in collaboration with a group of like-minded women who came together out of their desire to support IWD. Committee members include Katrina Amann Hoskins, Cordelia Davis, Alison Morrison, Elaine Butterfield, Denae Burchall, Debbie Desilva, Sierra Dietz and Wendy Percy.”

Nick Hoskins, Managing Director, Wakefield Quin Limited, says “IWD is a great opportunity to motivate and unite colleagues, industry, and our island community to think, act and be gender inclusive”.

The spokesperson continued, “Committee member, Wendy Percy said she was hopeful the event would reach a wider audience this year and participation would grow. Ms. Percy works at Willis Towers Watson and stated she has noticed a global shift.

“WTW has a core value to establish a truly inclusive culture that leverages a diverse workforce which has shown meaningful increases in the number of women and overall diversity in business leadership. We also are excited that we have a Chairman that engages our male colleagues to support gender equality which is becoming more of a trend throughout our re/insurance industry.

“The Campaign Sponsor is once again EY and corporate sponsors are WQ Ltd., and Willis Towers Watson [Bermuda] Ltd. Proceeds of the event will be going to Women’s Resource Centre.

“This is a great opportunity to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and our Island to think, act and be gender inclusive. We are hoping that participants will have a strong take away from the event and be able to ask themselves – what am I doing and how can I help press for progress. ”
