Bermuda Finish 5th In Team Relay Triathlon

April 7, 2018

Bermuda’s team of Flora Duffy, Erica Hawley, Tyler Butterfield and Tyler Smith finished in 5th place in the Commonwealth Games team relay triathlon, making a very strong showing in the island’s first ever appearance in the team relay event.

This finishes off what has been a superb showing by our triathletes at these Games, as in addition to Flora Duffy’s gold medal win, we had Erica Hawley placing 16th in the women’s race, Tyler Butterfield placing 18th in the men’s race, while Tyler Smith finished 21st.

The fact an island the size of Bermuda managed to produce four triathletes who can compete at this very elite level is exceptionally impressive, and Bermuda was the only small nation to have qualified for the team event.

Gold medalist Flora Duffy expressed her pride at this fact, tweeting, “Team Bermuda coming in hot! Tiny island but we have a team and that is awesome.”

Australia grabbed the gold medal, England finished second, and New Zealand won the bronze. Canada was fourth, and Bermuda finished 5th with a time of 1:20:44, defeating Wales, Scotland and South Africa.
