Court: Man Sentenced For Offensive Weapon

April 12, 2018

A serving prisoner has been given an extra 30 days behind bars after admitting possessing an offensive weapon.

This morning at Magistrates’ Court, Maxwell Smith pleaded guilty to possessing a screw driver in Hamilton on July 23, last year.

Smith was arrested by officers close to the Ferry Terminal after reports of a man acting suspiciously around some mopeds.

When he was searched police found a screw driver in his possession that he said was for protection. He told officers: “Some guys come at you with machetes, I’m going to have something just to fend guys off”.

Today he told the court: “I was not trying to hurt anybody.”

The court heard that Smith, 45, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment last November for a separate offence.

Initially he was fined $300 for the offensive weapon offence but asked to serve time in prison instead of paying the fine.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo imposed an extra 30 days on Smith’s sentence.
