Dr Freddie Evans & Govt Matter Now ‘Settled’
The “matter” between the Bermuda Government and Dr. Freddie Evans “has been settled without recourse to a costly trial,” the Government said today, and Dr. Evans will take up a new post in the Department of Youth, Sports and Recreation.
The circumstances surrounding Dr. Evans’ removal as Commissioner of Education last year resulted in legal action, and in confirming the matter was settled, the Government also noted that the “terms of the settlement are confidential.”
A Government spokesperson said, “The matter between the Bermuda Government and Dr. Freddie Evans has been settled without recourse to a costly trial.
“By mutual agreement, the terms of the settlement are confidential. Dr. Evans will take up a new post in the Department of Youth, Sports and Recreation.
“Dr. Evans looks forward to utilizing his skill set to further contribute to the youth of Bermuda.”
Dummies running the island! Should of never happened.
How much did it cost the taxpayer.?
Trying to palm this off as saving money is deceitful and dishonest. Why does the PLP constantly feel the need to deceive and disrespect the Bermudian public.
So what happen to the person that wrongfully fired him ? I guess no action will b taken at the end the person has caused tax payers who knows
THE SAGE REPORT 2013 SUMMARIZES THIS CASE IN GOVERNMENT & WHY
3. Performance Management and accountability
The performance of many individual employees and whole Departments is not effectively measured, analysed and adjusted to improve performance. There is a lack of alignment between Government policy, Ministry-level mission statements, Departmental goals and objectives, and key performance measures of both programmes and employees.
Employees who are high performers are not rewarded or promoted for their performance. Low performers do not face consequences, and are often retained and even promoted.
Government employees are often not recognised for their performance – good or bad. There are examples of serious infractions for which there have been no consequences.
Performance appraisals are not taken seriously and not utilised effectively to develop the Government workforce’s talents and career objectives. Discipline is not applied consistently or as often as required by the CECC as read with the Public Service Commission regulation.
This is often true in government, non-performers are transferred from one Department to another or rewarded with a higher post.
SAGE RECOMENDATION:
8. Lack of performance culture – Leaders have allowed a “don’t rock the boat” management and employee culture to prevail, so that frank conversations about performance are avoided, high performers are not rewarded, and non-performers are transferred from one Department to another or allowed to coast, leaving their coworkers to do their work. This is unfair to hard workers and erodes employee morale.
Serious Reform within the Civil Services is needed to avoid such cases as the Freddie Evans Fall out.

Spot on but don’t forget the BTU who defend the indefensible when it comes to teachers who should never have been allowed near a classroom. Funny how the private schools perform so well without union representation.
At what cost to us????
Probably about $370k.
None of your business says the PLP. Remember it is ‘their’ money now and you should be simply grateful that you get to give it to them. Plus transparency and accountability is for the other team.
So much for transparency???
David Burt…. C’mon man!!
You’re assuming the confidentiality clause was implemented by government.
Really,I guess that 24-12 gets us.Bunch of muppets
Funny that the PLP followers have nothing to say about this. Had it been OBA the people’s campaign would have called in the troops to march on parliament hill. Amazing PLP can do whatever they like and silence is the word.
Did you honestly think that even half of their grievances whilst in Opposition were legitimate?
Whilst the Govt has avoided a costly trial, the cost to the Bermudian tax payer cannot be dismissed so easily. if Mr Evans was an under performer, then we’ve got ourselves a lemon running a department which impacts our future generation of citizens. If Mr Evans was a high performer then we’ve removed someone who might have finally solved the mess that is the Education ministry. Guess we’ll never know, which isnt the platform this Government promised.
in Bermuda qualification don’t matter all that matters is what fraternity you belong to or if you are a member of a lodge or the
right sorority so there are 3 bermuda’s
He is hired and makes it through his probationary period, a new gov. almost, sort of, ‘fires’ him, tarnishes his reputation, pays him 6 figures in damages, and gives him another Gov. job. He negotiated very well, don’t you think? And, by the way, he deserves it. We, on the other hand, (because we continue to accept it) deserve to keep having our tax payer dollars, thrown out the window on issues which can be attributed to Government administration incompetence, without any consequences.
12 out of 36 understand what you just said that is why we in trouble.
Just imagine the huge marches if the OBA had done this!!!???
Was this presumably senior position created for him, or was it vacant?
Just a seat warming position until he accumulates enough time for a generous civil service pension – inflation indexed of course.
Secrecy, payoffs, Non-Disclosure Agreements, keeping things secret from taxpayers. Firing someone in such an incompetent way that you have to hire them again.
This is what we got when we voted this lot in.
Underhanded games played with OUR MONEY.
The Gravy Train just gets longer. What is this new roles salary and benefits?
