KBB’s Annual Island-Wide Earth Day Cleanup
The Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] annual island-wide Earth Day Cleanup is set to be held this Sunday [April 22].
A spokesperson said, “In celebration of Earth Day which is this Sunday, April 22, Keep Bermuda Beautiful will host its annual island-wide cleanup from 9.00am to 12.00pm. There will be teams out in various locations across the Island. Go ahead and honk, wave and shout out a thank you when you spot any participants.
“Earth Day is a global event each year. Keep Bermuda Beautiful volunteers will join more than 1 billion people in 192 countries around the world who now take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.

“In Bermuda, more than 700 volunteers have registered to clean up at 34 locations across the Island, this includes approximately 400 students in the Government’s Youth, Sport and Recreation afterschool programme. Bermuda’s schools, hotels and service industries are also represented with groups from Saltus, BHS and Paget Primary School; Raleigh Bermuda; BELCO; Bermuda Society of Interior Designers; Fairmont Southampton Hotel; and divisions of Bermuda Hospitals Board including Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute and Allied Health. A few of these teams are doing their cleanups earlier than Sunday.”
KBB executive director Anne Hyde said, “This is a great opportunity for family and friends to get together and enjoy the spring sunshine and be active outdoors. Participants will see first-hand the quantity and types of trash that have fallen from overflowing waste bins, blown out of the back of uncovered trucks or been carelessly dropped by people who are passing through our public roads, parks and trails.
“The Earth Day Cleanup addresses the immediate need to clean up to keep our island looking it’s best. It also heightens our awareness of the impact of single-use plastic on our environment and for everyone to be more careful in their consumption and disposal habits. KBB has been hosting this annual cleanup for more than 50 years. In 2016 volunteers picked up 14 tons of trash, recyclables and bulky waste from 30 locations.”
“If you haven’t registered you can still join in at the last minute on Sunday 22 April from 9am – 12noon with the team at Kindley Field Road next to the Airport, or clean up in your own neighbourhood, then contact KBB to share your results on 295 5142 or email Anne@kbb.bm.”
“If you want to make a whole weekend of celebrating Earth Day, you can register for Greenrock’s event, which is in Dockyard on Saturday evening here and then KBB’s Earth Day cleanup on Sunday.”
