Video/Photos: Santo Cristo Dos Milagres Festival
[Updated with photos] The Portuguese community is gathering today [May 6] in order to celebrate “Festa do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres” [Festival of the Christ of Miracles].
A centuries old tradition that originated in the Azores in the 17th century, the festival sees a solemn procession move through Hamilton, with participants walking on a carpet of flowers set down beforehand. Some 400 years old, the Festival is one of the largest religious celebrations in the Azores, and is also celebrated by the Portuguese diaspora across the globe.
The festivities will continue until this evening at BAA, with vendors, refreshments, and entertainment including Portuguese recording artist José Malhoa as well as local acts including McCannon “Mox” Cassidy, In Motion Dance Production, Jessica Frias, Amalia Ponte and the Vasco da Gama Folklore dancers. Entrance is free and everyone is welcome to attend. We will have a photo gallery later on, and in the meantime the live video is below.
Update: The live broadcast has ended, and the 13-minute video replay is below

This is great that this is celebrated by the Portuguese diaspora across the globe. Awesome to see people celebrating their culture and History!
Now don’t get upset when black people celebrate the African Diaspora history!
Why would anyone get “upset” Upset?
Thanks for the video.
As a person of Portuguese heritage it made me sad to view this but proud.
Hardly any people watching and less attendees and participants.
These are the people that make noise; not the empty vessels that type on computers.
Namaste’
Love the colors. I think I might take a ride to BAA and see if they still serve some Octopus stew.
