Tennis: Phillips Returns After Successful Tour
Daniel Phillips, a 13-year-old Bermudian tennis star, recently participated in the Caribbean Junior Tennis Circuit, showcasing his immense talents as he competed against top tennis players in Aruba, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
Now back in Bermuda, Phillips will continue competing in a number of local tournaments this summer before returning to the Rafa Nadal Academy in Spain in September.
Phillips’ Caribbean tour was made possible by sponsorship from Sam Maybury, Phillips’ longtime coach and founder of Rootz Tennis, as well as donations from long-time Bermudian resident, Chris Maybury, and Karim Alibhai, founder and principal of Gencom and the owner of the newly renovated Rosewood Bermuda.
“We are honored to support Daniel during his Caribbean tennis tour and beyond,” said Karim Alibhai, founder and principal of Gencom.
“We are confident that Daniel’s participation in this tour will not only profoundly impact his tennis career but will also elevate the profile of Bermuda as an international tennis destination.”
Phillips kicked off the Caribbean Junior Tennis Circuit tour by claiming victory in the TIHTA Tournament in Aruba and the Junkanoo Bowl Tournament in the Bahamas, before winning the Jamaica Jr. Tournament in Kingston, Jamaica and defaulting in the Copa Merengue in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Now back in Bermuda, Phillips will compete this week in the Mens A and B at the MTM Championships as well as the Highland Spring Junior Open Tennis Tournament during the week of July 30th.
Phillips is also preparing to compete in the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ U14 tournament in the UK next year and will continue competing at the Orange Bowl in the US and Tennis Europe.
Phillips began playing tennis at an early age. His passion for the sport has been carefully cultivated by his coach and mentor Sam Maybury. Phillips currently attends the Rafa Nadal Tennis Academy in Mallorca, Spain where he is preparing for Road to Wimbledon in 2019.
