National Fuel Policy For Public Review
[Updated] Minister of Transport and Regulatory Affairs Walter Roban said he is “pleased with the approval of the National Fuel Policy [NFP] of Bermuda and encourages the public to review it online.”
A Government spokesperson said, “Minister of Transport and Regulatory Affairs, The Hon. Walter H. Roban is pleased with the approval of the National Fuel Policy [NFP] of Bermuda and encourages the public to review it online.
“The NFP provides guidelines to direct Bermuda’s fuels sector towards an affordable and sustainable energy future that keeps with international best practice. The Policy defines fuels as ‘materials that are burned to generate energy for electricity, transport an stationary use.’
“The NFP was created in response to public concern over the high cost of imported fuels and an increased understanding about how they impact the quality of health and the environment. In time, the fuels sector will be guided by regulations for fuels pricing, standards for reliable maintenance and operation of critical infrastructure and transparency for fuels procurement.”
Minister Roban commented, “The National Fuels Policy marks a shift away from heavy carbon fuels, towards low-carbon fuels which are better for the environment. The emphasis on energy efficiency and fuel conservation is part of the Government’s transition towards a clean energy future.”
“The NFP outlines eight goals that provide guidelines for the Government’s plan to move to a lower-carbon fuel sector.
“The goals of the NFP are:
- Safeguard fuel security
- Ensure fuels are least cost
- Guarantee public safety
- Promote environmental sustainability
- Foster economic growth
- Ensure affordability
- Increase administrative effectiveness [ensure the policy is practical and works as intended]
“In addition to outlining goals, the NFP also provides a vision for the year 2035:
- Increase the share of low-carbon fuels to more than half of Bermuda’s fuels mix [57%]
- Increase energy conservation to about a fifth of total current consumption [20%]
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 25%
