Visitors On Cycle Robbed In Hamilton Parish

August 26, 2018

Two visitors riding a rental scooter along Harrington Sound Road this afternoon [Aug 26] were approached by two men on a motorcycle when the pillion passenger attempted to remove a handbag from the scooter’s basket before brandishing a bladed article, according to police. Both cycles then came to a stop and the man was able to take the handbag before the two men made good their escape.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 3:25pm Sunday, August 26th police officers responded to a reported robbery on Harrington Sound Road in Hamilton Parish, near the junction with Quarry Road.

“Initial information suggests that two visitors riding a rental scooter along the eastbound lane of Harrington Sound Road were approached by two men on a motorcycle – with the second man [pillion passenger] attempting to remove a handbag from the scooter’s basket before brandishing a bladed article.

“Apparently both vehicles then came to a stop and the second man was able to take the handbag. The two men made good their escape on the same motorcycle they arrived on.

“There were no reported injuries. Officers immediately conducted a search of the surrounding area for the two offenders and efforts to locate both men continue.

“Any witnesses or persons with relevant information regarding this robbery are asked to call the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744 or the independent and anonymous Crime Stoppers hotline 800-8477.”

  1. Honestly says:

So ridiculous!! These idiots need to be stopped. Lesson: If you don’t have, can’t afford it, you don’t need it! Leave people alone!!!

  2. Hair says:

    B@stards!!!

  3. facts of the rock says:

    Bring back the cat!

  4. Southampton says:

Catch these b****** and beat them.
The court needs to be more strict with these idiots.
Make them work on road crews, pick up garbage or sweep the streets.
    Make sure they are humiliated.
Try to steal my handbag and see what happens to you.

  5. Oh,I see now says:

In some places they take ya damned hand off for theft. Some of us see cruel and unusual punishment then we say, oh I see now( pardon the pun).

    • PBanks says:

Maybe some more Brooklyn folk will be here next time a lowlife crook tries to rob em

  6. JohnBoy says:

Do they still install open baskets on rental bikes? Nobody should have the wire baskets anymore.

  7. Arthur E Raynor - Atlanta says:

Sad news. One day they will rob a prominent person like a major USA TV reporter or weather person with millions of followers/viewers. They will publicly report on air their negative experience while there on the island then it will be a sad state of affairs.
Always remember that sometimes the US Government is quick to issue travel warning to protect its citizens from threats both real and perceived.
    Bad news travels real fast!

  8. Predator Night Vision says:

Public needs to know who they are, put their faces and names everywhere. Ban them from ever travelling off island for the rest of their life, give them life in prison after a sever public whipping until their skin peels off, deprive them of food until they almost die then put them in prison after castrating them. That would be justice. Or chop their hands and feet off. Things like this should be law for such offences. Stop supporting criminals, time to punish them so bad they wont commit crime. Who agrees?

    • Kathy says:

Agree 100%. If the people are for harsher sentences, why aren’t the lawmakers enacting them?

In Saudi Arabia, if you steal, you get your hand chopped off. Simple rule. If you steel again, you get your other hand chopped off.

  9. Warwick West says:

Yet again, the very people that we need to visit Bermuda, bring their US$ and spread the good news, are being attacked.

Keep at it guys and there will soon be NO tourists to rob as they will stop coming.

You bunch of idiots. Horrible, horrible senseless attack. I hope they get you and you are punished to the fullest extent of the law. Creeps and COWARDS.

    • Kim Smith says:

I would like to hear a public statement from the Government condemning this behaviour.

      • Kathy says:

We need the Government to enact much harsher laws that put fear in these guys. They ain’t afraid of anything because they know they will just get a little tap on their bottom!

      • Question says:

I’m sure Burt and Bean will come out at some point and tell us their holistic approach will work, while at the same time they throw in a snide comment about the Police.

  10. One of these days I am going to see it happen…on this day…I will decide the perpetrators fates…I might call police…but I doubt it…they are too selective in their work…

  11. Eve says:

Did the rental company warn the tourists not to put handbags and other valuables in the basket? This type of snatch & grab from scooter baskets has been a problem for years.

    • Family Man says:

Yup, blame the victim. They should have known people here just can’t resist the temptation to help themselves to other peoples things.

    • PBanks says:

Yes, stealing from moped users isn’t a new thing, but when you’re being threatened at knife point, probably not much you can do when in unfamiliar surroundings.

I’m putting all the blame on the lowlife crooks though, not the cycle livery.

  12. Visitors should be well aware that no matter where they choose to visit, these are occurrences!!
In spotting several visitors, on a daily basis, some behave as though they have not a care in the world!
Others, on the other hand, are more vigilant.
Bermuda is no exception to theft, robbery. Bermuda is a part of the western world.
My suggestion: Travel in intelligent groups, focus and be aware of your surroundings and your belongings!!

    • campervan says:

      ^^^^^^^^^ apologist.
      24/12 sort it.

    • Eve says:

Visitors do have a responsibility to be aware when they travel but Bermuda has a responsibility to insure visitors get additional advice/reminders to insure they do not become complacent in paradise. A few years ago US State Dept. increased their warning to travelers to Bermuda after an increase in visitor robberies and muggings . There was a big outcry from the government and tourism stakeholders, the warning was in place for more than a year. US Sate Dept. has Bermuda on lowest warning; “Normal Precautions” but could easily increase the warning with no advanced notice. The BTA could very easily have a program that gets reminders to visitors without it looking like a glaring warning.

    • Question says:

Typical. Blame the victim. You just can’t face it can you. You can’t blame the sector of society that thinks robbing and stealing is culturally acceptable.
Did you get your excuse book from CURB?

    • aceboy says:

These people were on holiday and frankly deserve not to have a care in the world. Where do you get off blaming them? They were robbed by a couple of thugs. Your suggestion is noted….I guess we all have to live like that nowadays. Especially with the likes of you acting as if it is normal.

  13. Egghead says:

These guys should be castrated and blinded for destroying our livelihoods.

  14. Just a suggestion says:

Where is the Pastor, Caines where are you? On some fancy trip talking dribble. Lets get down to shelly bay and protest. Seems to be the only way you get attention

  15. Kathy says:

Either they should be given lock boxes or the baskets should be removed. One day someone is going to get killed when they grab a back and knock them to the ground.

  16. Y-Gurl says:

This is unfortunately the way Bermuda is today, these sad headlines are regularly seen and we know it’s very likely the BPS will not solve and procedure this crime if their record is anything to go by. tThe Island has been turned over to the criminals. Drastic measures maybe a minimum sentence for crimes against tourists, then again that still requires the BPS actually catch the scum that perpetrates these cowardly acts

  17. myfavplacebda says:

We’ve traveled to Bermuda for the last 20 years and all but last year we felt safe. Last year we were almost robbed along with 2 women from Ny at Daniels Head. We were also terrorized and forced off the road twice by the same person on a cycle. He came at us, tried to clip our bike then turned around and came at us again. He could have killed both my husband and I and destroyed our childrens lives. That happened by the gas station close to Mangrove bay.

  18. Lone Wolf says:

I agree that we need much harsher sentences for those who choose to commit these crimes. But it is never going to happen if all we do is rant and rave in the comment section of a newspaper thread. If you want action, do what the union always does. Go on strike, picket around town, shut down Bermuda! Can you imagine if the bus drivers were the ONLY people working and everyone else went on strike? Anything short of that is just chit-chat and will never help to resolve the issue. Even a publicly humiliating video like that one from dockyard a little while back isn’t enough to stop these criminals. They simply do not care.
