Butterfield Award Scholarships To Three Students
The Bank of Butterfield announced their 2018 scholarship winners – Chanah Bremar, Ryan Dowling and Selena Dasilva.
A spokesperson said, “The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited announced the recipients of its 2018 scholarship awards: Chanah Bremar [Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship]; Ryan Dowling [Butterfield Post-Graduate Scholarship]; and Selena Dasilva, [Undergraduate Scholarship for Employees’ Children].
“The Sir Harry D. Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship is awarded to a Bermudian student commencing, or already pursuing, an undergraduate degree overseas at an accredited university. This Scholarship has been offered every year since 1978 to honour Butterfield’s late Chairman, former Rhodes Scholar, Sir Harry D. Butterfield, whose distinguished career in public and business life was dedicated to the betterment of Bermuda and Bermudians. The award has an annual value of $25,000, tenable for up to four years.
“2018 Recipient Chanah Bremar is currently enrolled at Mercer University in Alabama where she will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering with a mechanical specialisation. With mechanical engineering she hopes to concentrate on design and energy systems with a focus on sustainability and service. Chanah is currently designing and constructing an adjustable walker with spring compression handles for people with post-polio syndrome.
“The Butterfield Postgraduate Scholarship is available to students from all ten Butterfield jurisdictions around the world who are studying in a field related to the preservation and improvement of island environments at accredited institutions. The award has an annual value of $25,000, tenable for up to four years.
“2018 Recipient Ryan Dowling is a Bermudian student currently enrolled at The University of Edinburgh where he is pursuing his Master of Science in Carbon Management, with a focus on Environmental Sustainability. With a BSc in Business Administration and a MSc in Strategic Management from Rotterdam School of Management from Erasmus University, Ryan hopes to gain a deeper understanding of carbon market investments in order to fully enter the field of impact investing.
“The Butterfield Undergraduate Scholarship for Employees’ Children is awarded to a child of a Butterfield employee who is commencing or already pursuing an undergraduate degree at an accredited institution. One scholarship is awarded in each of three regions: Atlantic, comprising Bermuda and Canada; Caribbean, comprising the Cayman Islands and The Bahamas; and Europe for Guernsey, Switzerland and the UK. Each of the awards has an annual value of $25,000, tenable for up to four years.
“This year’s Atlantic Scholarship is awarded to Selena Dasilva, a Bermudian who is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Business from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. She plans to major in accounting and then pursue a Chartered Professional Accountant designation.
“Each year, Butterfield selects scholarship recipients from among hundreds of deserving applicants. Criteria used in selecting scholarship recipients include academic achievement, financial need, character, leadership qualities, civic attainment and involvement and achievements in non-curricular activities, including the arts and sports.”
McKeisha Smith, Chairman of Butterfield’s scholarship committee said, “We had a large pool of very talented, deserving young people apply for the 2018 scholarships. Chanah, Ryan and Selena all demonstrated a great deal of passion for their chosen fields of study and have shown exceptional leadership in other areas as well. We are pleased to be able to assist them in their pursuit of higher education, and we are excited to watch them progress in their academic careers. Congratulations to all three recipients.
