October 13, 2018

Somersfield Academy Children’s House students from the Monarch class visited J&J Produce Pumpkin patch on Friday.

The twenty two students ages 3 – 5 years were accompanied by several parent volunteers along with the two Montessori classroom co-teachers. The students enjoyed learning about pumpkin varieties, including their unique sizes and shapes.

Mrs. Tannock and Ms. Bielby said, “The goal of the field trip was to engage the students in a fun outdoor sensorial and science extension lesson. The students applied their visual discrimination skills, introduced in the classroom, to discover various sized pumpkins.

“They also made connections to math as they observed that the smaller pumpkins cost less while the larger pumpkins required more money. In addition, the students explored a variety of weights through hands-on learning while lifting numerous pumpkins.

“Their science lesson extension including observing the current season, Fall/Autumn, and the weather of the day, sunny. The students enjoyed the outing and were happy to hoist their ‘harvest’ back to Somersfield.”
