WindReach Appoint Adaptive Sports Coordinator
WindReach has named Meghan Calhoun as the group’s new Adaptive Sports Coordinator.
A spokesperson said, “Being inclusive, providing equal opportunities and shooting for the stars are some of the many ways WindReach looks to continue WindReach founder Alexander “Sandy” Mitchell’s legacy.
“To keep us moving forward towards the target of celebrating all abilities and enriching the quality of lives for individuals living with special needs, the WindReach Board of Directors and Management are excited to introduce Ms. Meghan Calhoun, our new Adaptive Sports Coordinator.
“Meg joined the organization in the Summer of 2018 and brings with her passion to support individuals with special needs. By connecting communities, building meaningful relationships and inspiring individuals of all abilities to reach their potential and personal goals, Meg will provide opportunities that look to transform surviving into thriving. All that is necessary is the individual’s willingness to be open and try.
“Meg’s experience has shown her that with minor adaptions persons that are differently abled can participate in the sport of their choice. Blend in willingness, purpose and some fun, and the sky’s the limit. We are excited to welcome Meg to the celebration of all abilities.”
Meghan Calhoun:
“WindReach’s newest team member looks to further enhance the Adaptive Sports Programme by educating participants and the larger community of the wide range of positive outcomes that inclusive sport opportunities creates. First up on Meg’s calendar as the Adaptive Sports Coordinator is the 8th Annual Andrew Faries Archery Tournament scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd 2018 at WindReach.
“The Tournament is in memory of Mr. Andrew Faries who was an active participant in the WindReach Archer and Adaptive Sports Programmes for many years. Andrew was known throughout the community as ‘Hott Wheels’ as he took great pride in passing his motor cycle riding examination allowing him the independence of zooming around the island on his trike. He believed in an even playing field and that sports were meant to be enjoyed by all.
“Registration for the upcoming tournament is now open. We invite archers of all ages, abilities and experience levels to download a registration form from our website. For more information on how to register, or with any questions, please email Meg at mcalhoun@windreach.bm or call 238-2469 ext. 205. Early registration ends October 26th with late registration available until October 31st. Registration on Tournament day, Saturday, November 3rd 2018, will be subject to availability. WindReach thanks the Huckleberry Restaurant and Beau’s Bar for their generous support and willingness to sponsor this event.”
“As WindReach quickly approaches the charity’s 20th anniversary in 2019, Meg will play an important role in serving the 200 individuals living with special needs that participate in our diverse programmes each week. Through the Adaptive Sports Programme Meg will look to support participants of all ages, using adaptive sports, to achieve their personal goals.
“WindReach serves individuals with diagnoses on many different levels. Whether physical, cognitive or invisible, all those differently abled are welcomed to engage in adaptive sports with a goal to improve physical and mental well-being or strive for social-emotional engagement. Participation for recreational enjoyment and fulfillment is also an important component. WindReach welcomes all abilities and will work with each individual to strive for unique goals and an enriching, purposeful life.
“Meg currently offers a number of adaptive sport opportunities for students and adults through WindReach’s programmes. In addition to group participants which are largely comprised of school students, each week Meg facilitates boccia, archery, seated exercise classes and hopes to re-introduce goalball for anyone who is keen to learn a fun, exciting and faster-paced adaptive sport.
“Monthly, Meg connects with the Bermuda Bicycle Association to enjoy handcycling at the National Stadium. Through sports the possibilities are endless. Reach out to Meg to see what’s exciting in the Adaptive Sports Programme; celebrate all abilities and learn more about how adaptive sports can positively impact individuals, throughout the life cycle, living with special needs.
