The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre received a message on Tuesday [Nov 6] from the Ship Security Alerting System that the LNG River Niger tanker was under attack by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, near Nigeria; evasive action was undertaken by the ship’s crew, with the attack aborted after an unsuccessful boarding attempt.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “On Tuesday, November 6 at 2.25am, an SSAS [Ship Security Alerting System] message was received by RCC Bermuda from the 133,000 gross ton LNG tanker LNG River Niger indicating that the vessel was under attack by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea, near Nigeria.

“Although the pirates opened fire on the vessel, evasive action was undertaken by ship’s crew, with the attack aborted and unsuccessful boarding of vessel.

“The Nigerian Navy was dispatched in an attempt to trace the source of the attack while the LNG River Niger continued under escort of a security vessel for pilot and entry into the port of Bonny, Nigeria. Gladly there were no reported injuries on-board.”
