Richards On Govt ‘Clearing Backlog’ Of Permits
Shadow Home Affairs Minister Sylvan Richards today “publicly thanked Government for clearing a backlog of work permit applications thereby recognizing the importance of guest workers to Bermuda.”
Mr Richards said, “I had tabled Parliamentary questions asking how many work permits were granted from September to November and in response, Minister Wayne Caines said that during those three months 2,205 permits had been approved.
“The Minister also broke down the figures to show there had been 1,350 one to five year permits approved. Of note is the fact that the number of permits approved in November of 2018 were more than double the number of work permits approved in September of 2018.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Minister with responsibility for Immigration for recognizing the importance of guest workers to the sustainability of our overall economy and I commend him for working expeditiously to approve these backlogged work permits,” Mr Richards added.
“Of equal importance, I would also hope that in clearing the backlog left by his predecessor ample attention was given to ensuring that qualified Bermudians were carefully considered for these positions.
“I am curious, also, as to what percentage of these work permit renewals actually went before the Immigration Board for vetting, but that is a question for another day.”

The appearance certainly is that the Minister formerly responsible for Immigration was dragging his feet on issuing work permits and that perception is NOT good for Bermuda.

Yet now the PLP is saying we must bring in more foreigners to fix/stimulate the economy. They will do the exact same thing the UBP were trying to do except you will be fine with it now because its the PLP and not the UBP…
The economy is tanking. It’s in free fall. It’s well known that there are not enough of us to support the economic shackles the PLP placed on our children.

How much money was wasted paying Immigration Civil Servants to do nothing for the past year?
These figures tell us nothing at all about the backlog of work permit applications at any point.
While these figures may look good, it’s difficult to show if they are clearing a backlog if you do not also share figures on how many remain to be processed. Maybe more permits were submitted in the later months and the percentage unprocessed remains the same, who knows. A better statistic would be to show the average days between an application being submitted and it being first taken to the Board.
@Hope, why do you think that specific Parliamentary Question for those specific months was asked? Everyone knew that there was a backlog, Minister Brown and Caines have both admitted it publicly. These number just quantify how bad the problem was.
You’re right they do, but they do not show if the situation has improved, and surely that is what we want to know, if we were already aware of the backlog itself.
One day the PLP will not the UBP/OBA to blame everything on.

The permit types are a joke. The majority can get a 1 year type that renews infinitely.
