Institute Of Directors Celebrates Milestone

February 20, 2019

The Bermuda branch of the Institute of Directors has just passed two significant milestones after seeing the number of Island residents completing the Certificate in Company Direction [CICD] designation pass the 50 mark and 20 have now completed the Diploma in Company Direction.

A spokesperson said, “A deliberate drive to focus on professional development has succeeded in increasing the number of prospective directors available to serve Bermuda-registered companies, helping to enhance the Island’s standing as a leading business centre.

“The Bermuda branch of the Institute of Directors has just passed two significant milestones after seeing the number of Island residents completing the Certificate in Company Direction [CICD] designation pass the 50 mark and 20 have now completed the Diploma in Company Direction.”

Rochelle Simons, the IoD Bermuda branch Chairwoman, and manager of the professional development platform for the past six years, said: “We congratulate the 10 delegates who completed the CICD designation last year. The 2018 CICD exam successes have brought the number of Certificate holders to 53 which is a milestone accomplishment for our small jurisdiction.

“The IoD is delighted to have been able to support their efforts and delighted that we are meeting one of our core mandates, which is to broaden and strengthen the director talent pool in Bermuda.”

She added: “In addition to successes in the CICD programme, the Branch is also celebrating 2018 Diploma in Company Direction [Diploma] results. This programme is only available to delegates who have completed the CICD programme.

“Eight delegates successfully completed the three-hour Diploma case study examination which placed delegates as new non-executive directors who were required to make recommendations to the board following the review and assessment of a set of board papers. The success of the eight delegates brings the total Diploma holders to 20.”

Mrs. Simons added: “The Branch has intentionally focused on professional development and our goal was to increase the number prospective directors available to serve Bermuda registered companies and support them and those who currently hold director roles by providing an internationally recognized director development programme that would enhance Bermuda’s standing as a leading business centre.

“While our work is not yet done, I am absolutely celebrating passing the half-century mark acknowledging the 53 delegates who may now use the Cert IoD designation following their name. This is a great accomplishment for our small jurisdiction over a five-year period.”

She added: “It may seem an obvious thing to say, but we cannot understate the importance of directors fully understanding their roles and responsibilities. Personal and collective responsibility is being actively assessed by corporate stakeholder groups and increasingly by regulatory bodies.

“Therefore, board room discussions must be robust and directors must be prepared to be present and actively engaged in those discussions. I firmly believe that through its training, the IoD is helping to prepare the next wave of leaders in Bermuda.”

The Chartered Director programme has three stages: a Certificate in Company Direction [CICD], made up of modules on the Role of the Director and the Board; Strategy for Directors; Finance for Non-Finance Directors, and Leadership for Directors, a Diploma in Company Direction and Chartered Director where delegates submit portfolios of actual director experience to the IoD London for review and assessment. If the portfolio is deemed substantive, the delegate will then be interviewed by two Chartered Directors.

The IoD’s 2019 Certificate in Company Direction programme begins on February 28. For more information on IoD professional training programmes email chair.bermuda@iod.net.
