Ministry: Public Schools Will Be Open Tomorrow
The Ministry of Education is informing the public that all Bermuda Public Schools will be open and ready to receive students tomorrow [June 3].
“This decision comes following a meeting held by the BUT membership this afternoon”, a spokesperson said.
“Discussions with the Bermuda Union of Teachers [BUT] on Friday, 31 May, regarding the issues that led to teachers not reporting to class on Friday, was positive and fruitful.
“Over the next few weeks, attention will be brought to several issues that have been outstanding for many years, as well as plans put in place on how to address other items before the start of the 2019/20 school year.”
Minister of Education Diallo Rabain said, “I want our parents to be assured that the Government is committed to ensuring incidents like Friday’s are relegated to the past. Discussions with the BUT also revolved around changing the nature of the relationship between the Ministry of Education and the Bermuda Union of Teachers.
“Clearer lines of communication will be put in place, allowing more access to myself and the entire body of teachers. The disruption of our children’s education is unfortunate under any circumstance, and we must do what is necessary to prevent this from happening again.
“I am happy we could discuss these outstanding issues and look forward to a renewed and reformed relationship with the BUT, as was discussed in our meetings on Friday.”
We hear this every time their is a disruption of service. Not the fault of the PLP or OBA except for the fact that they have both encouraged it by not penalizing the unions for constantly striking illegally. There was no reason why these teachers could not have arranged this meeting at 3:30 pm on Friday or even on Saturday. If there was an issue that was so bad that it was preventing them from teaching on Friday, was it resolved already? Of course not. This was just another way that the BUT get to flex their muscles and remain relevant and makes the teachers that pay their dues, believe that they are actually doing something that they couldn’t do on their own.
Wow, schools are open! Isn’t it basic govt responsibility to educate its citizens?
