Videos: Bermuda vs Haiti Highlights, Comments
Bermuda made its historic debut in the Concacaf Gold Cup this evening [June 16], matching up against Haiti in Costa Rica, with Haiti earning a 2-1 win, while Bermuda scored its first ever Gold Cup goal.
Bermuda’s starting line-up included Dale Eve, Calon Minors, Jaylon Bather, Lejaun Simmons, Donte Brangman, Zeiko Lewis, Willie Clemons, Osagi Bascome, Dante Leverock, Reggie Lambe and Nahki Wells.
The first half looked like it would come to a close with the teams tied 0-0 when Bermuda’s captain Dante Leverock headed home a goal to mark Bermuda’s first ever goal in the Gold Cup.
The second half saw Haiti ramp up the pressure on Bermuda, with our defense and goalkeeper Dale Eve repeatedly called into action, with Eve earning accolades from football legend Shaun Goater who praised him for making ‘great’ saves, and despite Bermuda’s best efforts, Haiti’s Frantzdy Pierrot made a strong showing to score two goals, pushing his team to the 2-1 victory.
Despite facing a significantly larger nation with a population exceeding ours by over ten million, Bermuda remained very competitive throughout, and showed that they more than belong on this international stage amongst the best of the best of the region.
Concacaf’s match report said, “A brace from Frantzdy Pierrot allowed Haiti to showcase experience with a 2-1 win over Bermuda on Sunday evening at the Estadio Nacional of Costa Rica to open Group B of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.
Captain Dante Leverock on scoring Bermuda’s first ever Gold Cup goal
“After both teams had a 50-50 ball possession for the first half, Bermuda responded with a total of two shots on target before the breaking the deadlock at the end of the first half. One minute was added when Dante Leverock found the back of the net with a header which was assisted by Osagi Bascome in the 45+1’.
“Haiti looked to mount a comeback as the second half started with a very fast pace, which is when Pierrot waited for his chance, burying a shot in the 54’ with a header from the right side of the six-yard box allowing Haiti to tie the match.
“Twelve minutes later Frantzdy was back at it in the 66’ with a right-footed shot that went straight to the center of the goal. The historical night in Costa Rica was then capped by the Haiti defense finishing the match to pocket Les Grenadiers’ first three points of the Gold Cup.”

Disappointing second half for BDA – All I can say!
To bad
Nice go guys, but we face the same problems that has haunted us over the years from bigger countries.
Out skilled, out paced and over powered.
Be proud of yourseleves.
The tale of what could have been….
Those missed chances in the first 20 mins cost us dearly, at this level you have to put those away. Clemons and Bascombe did well, they ran midfield. Wells was disappointing up top, nothing stuck. Minors did well on the left, Brangman not so well on the right, not really his position. Eve was arguably our best player. We lacked match fitness, and belief, this is a game we should have won and we should take a lot of positives from that.
I totally agree with Yahweh, we should had been 2-0 up at the end of that first half at lease! the mental concentration in the second half was poor.
Nahki Wells needs to be more clinical up front. Chances were there. Our goalie was massive.
Man I lost some money on this game….tale of two halves…Bermy came out 2nd half like the job was done…
It’s all over for BDA. Costa Rica is going to take us to school. They really had to win the match against Haiti to even stand a chance at advancing the group stage.
