Butterfield Bank Sponsors Bermuda Pride 2019

July 30, 2019

The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited today [July 30] officially announced its sponsorship of Bermuda Pride 2019.

A spokesperson said, “Butterfield is providing financial support to OUTBermuda for Bermuda Pride 2019, and will have a presence in the parade and at the community celebration in Victoria Park.”

Michael Neff, Butterfield’s Managing Director – Bermuda, said “Being one of the island’s largest employers and a company with operations in ten countries, we are fortunate to have a diverse team of talented employees who bring different experiences and perspectives to the table when we’re solving problems.

“This enables us to better understand and address the needs of customers from all parts of the communities we serve. Our diversity is our strength.

“Bermuda’s first Pride celebration will be an important milestone in our country’s history. It is both an opportunity to celebrate diversity within our community, and Bermuda’s progress to date in creating a more equal and inclusive society.

“But it is also a reminder that, as a community, we have more work to do to ensure that everyone in Bermuda has access to the same freedoms, and the opportunity to live their lives free of discrimination.

“We congratulate and we are pleased to support the efforts of OUTBermuda and the organisers of Bermuda Pride 2019. We encourage all of our employees and their loved ones—who are allies, supporters or members of the LGBTQI+ community—to join us in parading under the Butterfield banner in Bermuda’s first pride parade.”

Chen Foley of OUTBermuda and on behalf of the Bermuda Pride 2019 organisers said “We thank Butterfield for being a leader in relation to diversity and inclusion, as well as in helping make Bermuda’s first Pride celebration a reality.

“Beyond its financial backing, the Bank’s involvement is important because it helps underscore the vision for this event, which is to demonstrate that inclusion makes our community stronger and the jurisdiction more competitive, and that diversity is something we should celebrate rather than fear.”

Bermuda’s inaugural Pride weekend will comprise a panel discussion at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club on Friday, 30 August, a community celebration at Victoria Park starting at 11:00 a.m., and a parade through Hamilton starting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 31 August. 1. Justasuggestion says:

Well Done N.T Butterfield. I really wanted my employer on board but sadly our director is very narrow-minded. As a straight married family. We will all be attending providing support and enjoying a great fun family day out,and supporting a great cause. Well done

    • Rick says:

So because your employer will not jump on you call him narrow minded. If he wishes not to involve his company in this parade it’s his own dam business you fool.

    • Rog says:

to be fair, as much as I support gay rights… terms like “narrow-minded” are rather unfair.

The social justice communities preach love and tolerance… yet when someone doesn’t fall into place as desired they are branded bigots, narrow-minded, etc.

How tolerant are you really if you only tolerate beliefs that you yourself believe in, and anyone else who disagrees is considered ignorant or bigoted?

      • gayforward says:

” terms like “narrow-minded” are rather unfair.”

By unfair…you mean absolutely spot on, right?
You’re upset because the hatred you spew towards LGBT community is coming back to you.
        You reap what you sew…snowflake.

      • Mike Hind says:

That’s because they are bigots and are narrow minded.

Your entire argument is basically: why can’t you tolerate intolerance?

        That’s not how it works.

Why is it that people are expected to be tolerant of folks that want to hurt them? Why are we supposed to be respectful and polite to those who want to treat our friends and family as less than full citizens, as unworthy of rights?

        As for our beliefs?

We’re standing up for THEIR beliefs!

That’s the whole point! These folks would absolutely not stand for this happening to them. They’re just ok with it because it’s THEM that are getting to be on top.

    • PBanks says:

In fairness, companies aren’t obliged to take these stances, I wouldn’t be so quick to demean your employer’s stance. Focus on the support that you will give as an individual.

  2. Ok says:

Ok I am moving my money out of BNTB!!! Send a clear message from God!

    • sage says:

You might as well, you are paying them to profit from investing your money.

    • Real Deal says:

Bit Coin will free all from their control

    • Anbu says:

Ya and move it where? To the world wide bank that definitely dont give a crap abt your money? Lol. And p.s. they only notice if BIG money wants to leave their bank lmao.

    • JohnnyB says:

God is a fake made up story.

    • Mark says:

Pretty sure God does not make banking transactions. Why not move your money and yourself to Ghana? They hate the LGBT community as much as you.

      • Andrew says:

You’ve never stood at an ATM and said a little prayer before trying a withdrawal?

    • ko says:

god’s going to miss your $16

    • PBanks says:

Wait so you taking cash out of Butterfield Bank is a message from God? What?

    • moving my money right in says:

So you equate money with god.

      Lovely.

You are to be commended Butterfield.

  3. Smh says:

    Smh

  4. Rocky5 says:

This would have a lot more weight if this was supported by BNTB management and STAFF. I will support the event but will not attend because I do not wish to witness the expected abuse from Bermudians who hate our LGBT members

  5. Makes no sense says:

Wow..so if someone has there own beliefs they are narrow -minded…why do people have to be forced to accept something that they don’t believe in. Isn’t that what the gay community tries to inforce. Please practice what you preach and stop making people feel as if they are crazy for not believing/ accepting 2 men or 2 women are naturally supposed to be together.

    • Sandgrownan says:

      Lol… dumb sack of….

    • Mike Hind says:

      None of that is true.
And what two men or two women do together is none of your business. So, what you believe or accept is irrelevant.

      • Makes no sense says:

Right…its none of my business but they want to have a parade to put it all on display…please pick a side and sit down sir…lmao!!!!

        • Mike Hind says:

Yes! Because they are allowed to!
Freedom to assemble is one of the most BASIC human rights!
No one is forcing you to go, no one is forcing you to watch.

Just because YOU don’t like it doesn’t mean that they aren’t allowed to do it.

And it’s STILL none of your business.

          I’ve picked my side.

The side that believes that people shouldn’t be discriminated against for no reason. The side that believes in equality. The side that believes in truth and fairness and kindness.
The question is: why aren’t YOU on that side?

    • Ok says:

Rubbish! 2 men or 2 women are counter to nature and religion. Get it right!

      • gayforward says:

“Rubbish! 2 men or 2 women are counter to nature and religion.”

        LOL,
religion is unnatural. Homosexuality is natural. But you’re too stupid to understand that.

      • Andrew says:

You can’t invoke “counter to nature” as an argument and then in the same sentence support your argument with an irrational belief in the moral guidance of imaginary sky fairies.

      • Mike Hind says:

        A. Nature: no they aren’t. You are Ill-informed on the topic.
        B. Religion: who cares? Your religion is yours.

        None of this is relevant.

People have a right to assemble, even if you don’t approve.

    • SMH says:

Exactly…This whole topic in Bermuda right now should be put on the back burner. Its more important stuff this govt. should be focusing on.

    • Yup yup says:

Just ‘believing’ something doesn’t make you right or reasonable in your behaviour.

    • Ignorance isn’t bliss says:

If someone has beliefs that are prejudiced (sexist, racist, homophobic) then yes, it is extremely narrow minded and should be challenged. Well done to the Bank of Butterfield for leading the way and helping Bermuda out of the dark ages.

      • Makes no sense says:

So people are narrow- minded for not thinking that it’s natural for two people of the same sex to be together…wow. As the scripture says whats right will become wrong and whats wrong will be right… How dare you compare race with gay people. Blacks are not an abomination…

        • Mike Hind says:

          Yes. That’s exactly right.

And your religion is yours. No one else has to follow it.

When is this going to get through?

You wouldn’t accept someone else demanding that your life be negatively affected by THEIR religion, would you?

So why is it ok to demand that folks be treated as less than equal because of yours?

          and “abominations”?

Shame on you. Those are human beings. That’s disgusting.

        • PBanks says:

People in the past used religion to declare that black people were inferior and subhuman.

There’s a reason though that legislation in Western democracies was designed to be independent of religion. Otherwise we’d have to criminalize adultery, for example.

      • Hey says:

So then I can use your own tactic against you..if you dont believe in my beliefs then that makes you a bigot as well..great now we can all agree to disagree. There I cleared up everything…

        • Mike Hind says:

This is demanding tolerance of intolerance, which is ridiculous.

        • Mike Hind says:

And, for the record, I don’t have a problem with your beliefs. You can believe whatever you want.

The problem is that you and those like you seem to think that your beliefs should affect other people.

          Here’s the thing, though…

What I’m fighting for? It’s what YOU would be fighting for in pretty much any other situation.
If it was religion or race or anything else people were looking to use as a reason to discriminate against folks, you’d be right next to me in the fight for equality.

But because it’s something YOU don’t like, it’s ok with you.

That’s something you should really be ashamed of.

    • PBanks says:

What in Butterfield Bank’s statement has made you feel ‘forced to accept something’?

I see a statement that talks about celebrating diversity and creating inclusive societies. Nothing about mandating that everybody should partake of such celebration?

  6. Community First says:

What a welcome sign of corporate leadership – stepping up and investing in PRIDE 2019 in support of LGBTQIA+.

It always the right time to do the right thing and these quote captures bold leadership.

  7. Portia says:

May God bless your director for remaining steadfast, increase his prosperity and grant him good health.

    • Hey says:

Really…you think God will give blessings for acts that he condemns..wow…

  8. Jevon R says:

    I second that

  9. I will increase my Banking activity with NTB says:

I support a fair, diverse community that provides equality and protection for all.

I will increase my banking activity with the Butterfield Bank. Thanks for being a leader.

I wonder if HSBC will follow suit. Their branches in NYC had rainbow banners.

    • Ok says:

You are full of sh$& yeah right you will increase your activity more like it will be withdrawing money STFU

  10. Joe Bloggs says:

The PLP Government came to Butterfield’s rescue more than a decade ago and this is the thanks it gets. Butterfield Bank supports equality for all at a time when the PLP Government is going to the Privy Council to enshrine discrimination against gays in our law.
