Bermuda Sandcastle Competition On Aug 31

The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition — set to take place at Horseshoe Bay on Saturday, August 31st — will see up to 40 teams competing for $3,500 worth of prizes.

A spokesperson said, “Hamilton Princess & Beach Club today announce their title sponsorship of the 2019 Bermuda Sandcastle Competition. Additional sponsorship is provided by Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewelry, Digicel, the Oil group of companies and beverage donations provided by John Barritt & Sons.

“The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition, which takes place at Horseshoe Bay Beach on Saturday, August 31st this year, will see up to 40 teams competing to create Bermuda’s best sand sculpture out of the island’s signature pink sand, for $3,500 worth of prizes.

“An overall prize of $500 will be awarded to the most impressive sandcastle on the day with a further $3,000 worth of cash prizes to be won across four resident categories. The five categories in which teams can enter are:

  • Families
  • Children [under 12 years old]
  • Teenagers [13 to 19 years old]
  • Open
  • Visitors

“The Visitor’s category is open to those on vacation in Bermuda at the time of the competition, whether they are staying at Hamilton Princess & Beach Club, another hotel or with friends or family. The Bermuda Sandcastle Competition is looking forward to making each Visitors experience to the island a magical one.

“For entrants who want to have a trial run or get ideas on how to build a sandcastle, free workshops are being held. In these sessions, participants will learn how to create a masterpiece in sand from past champions, discover quick tips and tricks to keeping sand in place and other details.

“These free tutorials will take place at Horseshoe Bay Beach on the following evenings from 5:30pm:

  • Saturday, August 25th
  • Wednesday, August 28th
  • Thursday, August 29th

“The competition on Saturday, Aug 31 is free to enter, and teams can register online at www.sandcastle.bm. The number of spaces for teams is limited, so early booking is encouraged. Any questions about the event can be sent to hello@sandcastle.bm.

“Competitors must check in between 9:30am and noon on the day and building will commence at 10am. Each team will be assigned a building plot of 10ft by 10ft and will be supplied with a large mound of sand to work with to give them a head start. All entrants will receive free beverages on the day thanks to a long standing partnership with Barritts Ginger Beer.

“All sandcastle building tools must be downed by 4pm, at which time the judges will arrive on the beach and commence judging. The panel of judges includes: Jamal Hart from Youth Sport and Recreation, and N’zingha Ming from the BSOA gallery, Tim Morrison From the Hamilton Princess Hotel and David Thomas from the BTA.”
