Govt: Report Any Violations Of Immigration Law

October 23, 2019

Minister of National Security Wayne Caines is “sharing the ways that people can inform the Department of Immigration about foreign nationals who are working in Bermuda illegally,” with the Minister saying that “we are asking all residents, if you know of an individual or company in violation of an immigration law, please report it.”

A Government spokesperson said, “The Minister of National Security Wayne Caines is once again sharing the ways that people can inform the Department of Immigration about foreign nationals who are working in Bermuda illegally.

“The public will recall that earlier this year Minister Caines outlined the process in reporting immigration breaches. The Minister explained that there is a Compliance Section of the Department of Immigration which is responsible for the following:

  • Inspecting and investigating potential breaches against Immigration law, regulations and policy; this includes general, civil penalty investigations, and overstays;
  • Enforcing work permit conditions/restrictions;
  • Maintaining control/monitoring Bermuda’s borders or points of entry; this includes processing passengers for landing;
  • Managing the Bermuda stop list;
  • Monitoring visitor extensions;
  • Managing deportations and friendly escorts; and
  • Addressing ‘Wanted Persons’

“Since 2017, complaints received are as follows:

  • 2017 – 150 complaints received
  • 2018 – 126 complaints received
  • 2019 – To-date the department has received 128 complaints [of this number there are 81 general investigations in train and 47 civil penalties in train]

“Minister Caines notes that there are five ways to report an immigration complaint.

  • 1.By making an anonymous phone call to the Department of Immigration Tip Line at 296-5202
  • 2.Accessing the Department of Immigration Investigation Request Portal here.
  • 3.Sending an email outlining details of the breach to Immigrationcomplaints@gov.bm;
  • 4.Visiting the Department of Immigration to speak in person with a Compliance Inspector; or
  • 5.Sending a letter addressed to the Department of Immigration, First Floor Government Administration Building, 30 Parliament Street, Hamilton Bermuda outlining in detail the breach.

Minister Caines said today, “We appreciate the sensitivity surrounding the reporting of individuals who are in breach of our immigration laws.

“We also appreciate that many residents may be uncomfortable with the reporting process. I can assure the community that calling into our immigration hotline is a completely anonymous process.

“The Department of Immigration relies solely on information provided from the public to enable them to investigate potential breaches and there are several ways to do so. Every effort has been made to make this process as convenient, and unobtrusive as possible.

“We cannot stress enough the need for the public’s involvement in this process. We are asking all residents, if you know of an individual or company in violation of an immigration law, please report it.

“We also want to take this opportunity to remind both Bermudians and foreign nationals here illegally that there is zero tolerance for this type of behaviour. Persons found engaging in such activity will be prosecuted as these are serious offences which we will not ignore.”

  1. I win Internet of the day says:

    Can I report any Minister who is working illegally by not accomplishing the goals they are supposed to?

      • sandgrownan says:

        Going so well isn’t it – increased taxes, increased cost of living, fewer jobs, declining retail sales, declining economic confidence, empty suit premier, invisible finance minister, no immigration reform..boarded up business on front st and queen street…

        You’re a moron.

  2. Poo Bear says:

    Yep 30 odd up on the hill. All useless

  3. Question says:

    How is it anonymous? They can easily tell the number of the caller or the email address.

    • No says:

      It doesn’t say it’s anonymous, says it can be. This is designed by a moron.

      • Question says:

        “Here is my complaint. “

        “Thank you Mr Jones. Would you like to be completely anonymous? “

        “Yes please.”

        “Ok. See you next week at the PT meeting”.

  4. rubberman says:

    Given that it takes over two months for a work permit, and counting, for someone who has been here for over 10 years, I’m amazed that anyone from overseas is allowed to work here. I’m waiting four more weeks, then me and my family are leaving. That will cost Bda well in excess of $100K, and will directly affect private landlord, nursery, school, grocery stores and restaurants.

    Bermuda Government seem to be doing all they can possibly do not just to stifle growth in the economy, but also to actively reduce it.

    • Awakening-Giant says:

      Farewell, about time these companies give the locals the opportunities most only afford to the foreigners.by lying and lifting falsehoods against the locals.

      • rubberman says:

        No local is qualified. None applied. They are all as dumb as you, I guess.

        • Awakening-Giant says:

          Yup , I am so dumb I got you kissing my back side on this thread . Lol !!!!

  5. Terrific!!
    Bermudians… watch, listen, REPORT if necessary.
    It is about protecting what WE , collectively, have installed in OUR country. If there are people in your neighbourhoods, your jobs, in the parks, etc., and you, as a Bermudian, feel suspicious of that foreigner, REPORT THEM. It is about protecting US. We cannot go to any of these foreigners’ countries to set up job, house car..just like that.
    Do not be duped by their friendliness. Rubbish!!
    REPORT!!! REPORT!!!REPORT them!!

    • bluenose says:

      ‘suspicious of that foreigner’ ‘Do not be duped by their friendliness’ Shame on you for such disgusting comments.

    • bluenose says:

      Are you one of the friendly and welcoming Bermudians that one reads and hears about?

    • Awakening-Giant says:

      Start at your local grocers !!!!

    • Alyssia says:

      I love this parody. Reminds me of good old East Germany. Very funny!

    • trufth says:

      Feel the love.
      Bermudians are such nice people.

      • mixitup says:

        Nice enough to have been walked over for many years with regard to immigration and job opportunities, even when the economy was on overload… Don’t dare speak up, or you will be called all types of things…

        • wa says:

          Xenophobic, Homophobic and Racist….That’s what you are

        • Question says:

          If you’re a racist someone might tell you that. Got a problem with that?

        • sandgrownan says:

          never happened, it’s a myth

    • Anbu says:

      Uh, bermudians in england ring any bells? Or is that ok for u? Double standard much? I dont wanna hear that we r british either. Cause anyone who supports this admin deff dont wanna be “colonial” as they put it. Bet u are all for that tho huh?

      • wa says:

        ” Cause anyone who supports this admin deff dont wanna be “colonial””

        That can’t be true…otherwise they wouldn’t have accepted all those colonial titles.

    • Question says:

      If I had to guess, I’d say you’re either at the Post Office or the Dept of Immigration. Amirite?

    • wa says:

      “We cannot go to any of these foreigners’ ”

      NO…YOU can’t go because you’re a felon. LOL

  6. Joe Bloggs says:

    Perfect! Scare the remaining foreigners out of Bermuda so that all that will eventually be left are “real Bermudians”. I am a Bermudian and I will have to leave and work elsewhere if this madness carries on!

  7. sandgrownan says:

    Ah…Government under pressure..wheel out the immigration bogeyman….

  8. BermieBorn says:

    Where is the hotline to report Government waste, graft and time theft?

  9. Question says:

    Where do I report rude incompetent civil servants?

  10. joy says:

    what about those who married and separated from their spouse, no work permit needed like before.

  11. Lapsed says:

    “We cannot go to any of these foreigners’ countries to set up job, house car..just like that.”

    Apart from:

    You can get full British/EC passports
    You can live and work in UK and any EC country
    You can buy any property you can afford
    You can register there to vote immediately and can do so in any UK or EC election

    Even after Brexit you still have the whole of the UK to choose from.

    On the flip side, people with the required skill-set to work here, because there are not qualified Bermudians, are treated like absolute trash when Immigration finally deign to grant them a work permit.

  12. Toodle-oo says:

    So , from 2017 to date there has been 404 ‘reports’ or ‘complaints’ and there has been 47 ‘civil penalties in train’ wth that means.

    Does that represent near 10xs the number of false alarms to ‘real’ incidents ?

    Reminds me of an incident that I was witness to a few years back when a ‘grass roots Bermudian’ burst into the immigration department to complain about (report)someone who was here legitimately having a relationship with another ‘grass roots Bermudian’.
    Apparently he did this regularly and they had gotten used to showing him the door .

  13. Lucian says:

    U are so Damm and stupid to talk like this ,no man is an island and not man can stand alone.
