Update 2.10pm: Mrs. Ianthia Simmons-Wade was sworn in as a Senator and the Junior Minister for Seniors and the Cabinet Office.

A PLP spokesperson said, “The PLP is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Ianthia Simmons-Wade to our Senate team.

“As a healthcare professional with over 25 years of experience, Senator Simmons-Wade brings a wealth of experience and passion. She is a dedicated advocate for the rights of seniors and disabled persons and is committed to service to our community.

“As Bermuda grapples with the challenges of an aging population, Senator Simmons-Wade’s experience will be of great benefit to the country as we work to ensure our seniors, who are living longer, can live in dignity. We look forward to having her make her contribution to this and other critical issues to Bermuda.

Update: The live broadcast has concluded and the replay is below

“Senator Simmons-Wade was educated at Howard University, where she received her B.A. in Communications, George Washington University, receiving a Master’s in Health Service Administration and De Montford University, where she received a Master’s in Medical Law & Ethics.

“Her academic credentials combined with her years of experience in health care and with seniors should prove beneficial to policy creation and debate in the Senate as we continue to work towards delivering a better and fairer Bermuda.

“Mrs. Simmons-Wade is the wife of former PLP Leader Mr. L. Frederick Wade and has been a member and worker for the PLP for over 3 decades. We look forward to her positive contribution to the team.”

Premier David Burt said, “I am pleased that Ianthia Simmons-Wade has answered this call to a new phase of her public service. As she would put it ‘service to Bermuda pulses through my veins as if it were blood itself.’

“In her the people of Bermuda gain an extremely well-qualified and fearless advocate for the rights of disabled persons, seniors and for justice in healthcare.”
