Video: ‘Queen & Slim’ Highlights Shiona Turini
Following her Costume Designers Guild Award nomination, the makers of the film Queen & Slim created a video highlighting the work of Shiona Turini, calling the Bermudian fashion expert an “incredibly talented costume designer.”
The film recently debuted by earning a reported $15.8 million through five days, including $11.7 million over the weekend, according to the LA Times.
“Directed by Melina Matsoukas [“Insecure,” Beyoncé's “Formation” video] from a script by Lena Waithe, the film stars Daniel Kaluuya and newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith as a couple on the run after an altercation with a police officer turns deadly. It is the feature debut for both Matsoukas and Waithe. The film was well received with an A- CinemaScore and a 84% ‘fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.”
The movie’s social media account posted the video below saying, “Cheers to our fashion queen Shiona Turini, and her Costume Designers Guild Award nomination. Take a behind-the-scenes look at her work on Queen And Slim.”
Ms Turini posted the video on her Instagram page, saying: “Heading @queenandslim costume department was a culmination of all my education in style, history, and blackness. To say this was a collaboration of a lifetime is an understatement.
“Here’s just a tiny snippet of the millions of fittings, late nights + early mornings, overnight shoots, trudging through the Ohio polar vortex, hours of dyeing and aging, hundreds of background extras; and the heart + soul that went into making this film. I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world.
“This project is so personal and profound to me. It’s a showcase of the collaborative efforts of black creatives and the level of care we have for our crafts. As a plus, embarking on this movie with @msmelina was so special.
“Her eye and visual tastes are masterful and intentional every step of the way; it made for a truly dynamic visual conversation between the costumes and scenery throughout. It was an inaugural film for us both, for which I am now graciously excited to be nominated for my first @costumeawards for excellent costume design. Talk about dreamwork.”
